This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Develops, organizes and implements high quality, member-focused YMCA aquatic programs.

Under thedirection of the Executive Director of Child Care Services, the Aquatic Director oversees the management of all aspects of the swim lesson program and other classes as well as maintaining positive relationships with members; conduction of current programs; implementation of new programs; supervision of staff include of scheduling and evaluating effectiveness; and maintaining the pool environment per YMCA and Department of Health standards.

Provide strong recruitment, development and succession planning process to ensure the hiring, professional development of retention of high quality staff. Respond to member and participant concerns in a timely manner addressing both customer, service and safety concerns. Ensure that all policies of the organization are implanted including financial, human resources and program policies. Serve as a swim instructor and or lifeguard as needed.

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following: 

  • To ensure the safety of every individual at the YMCA.  Both in and around the pool. Maintain accurate records required by CT Health Department codes.
  • To attend and organize staff meetings and in service trainings.
  • Travel among local branches will be required for in services.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel and volunteers as needed.  Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete.
  • Creates and schedules swim classes, water fitness classes, and swim team practices meets.
  • Develops and monitors program budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Assists in YMCA fund raising activities and special events.
  • Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
  • Hours may include evenings and weekends 
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in related field or 5 years experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • 21 years of age or older – Required
  • Reliable transportation – Required
  • One or more year(s) previous supervisory experience - Required 
  • Two or more years of experience teaching swim lesson – Required
  • Managing a department of staff, lifeguard’s, and swim instructors.
  • Working with the community and parents.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • CPR for Professional Rescue certificate, AED and oxygen administration – Required
  • Current YMCA or Red Cross lifeguarding certificate – Required
  • First Aid certificate- Required
  • Must complete online Blood borne Pathogens and Employee Safety trainings prior to initial assignment to position.
  • Must complete other New Employee training within the first 90-days of employment.
  • Must complete Child Abuse Prevention trainings within the first 30-days of employment.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $38,000.00 - $41,000.00
