Consistent with the Christian mission and vision of the YMCA of Middle TN, and in cooperation with other YMCA staff, under the direction of the Associate Executive Director, the Wellness Director is responsible for day-to-day operations of all health and wellness programming, and must balance fiscal responsibility, staff development/motivation, quality program delivery and program area upkeep, cleanliness, and safety to experience success.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Model the YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility
  • Ensure safe and risk free environment at all times while meeting the individual needs of the participants
  • Develop and grow programs and services that position the center as the premier wellness and healthy lifestyles program provider in the community including for fee programs, wellness demonstrations on the wellness floor, and growing our personal training services as the premier personal training program provider in the community
  • Supervise, train and develop a strong team of staff and volunteers serving all components of wellness and healthy living programs that assist in the development and retention of membership in accordance with the YMCA mission
  • Provide opportunities for members to connect, develop relationships, and achieve their goals in healthy lifestyles and wellness
  • Coordinate internal and external opportunities for healthy lifestyle programming for corporate partners
  • Prepare, and operate within, the program budgets for the Wellness and Group Fitness departments
  • Participate in and own wellness floor layout, including equipment layout and purchases; ensure wellness center and group fitness areas are safe, clean and well maintained
  • Participate in, and solicit others for, necessary center financial development efforts that include the We Build People Campaign and other special projects
  • Serve on the Wellness Cabinet and other cabinets that relate to healthy lifestyles within the Association as deemed appropriate by supervisor
  • Maintain all required certifications and CEC’s
  • Build relationships and interact with members
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree or comparable experience in program development, fitness education, and supervision required
Skills/Experience: 
  • Passion, enthusiasm, and commitment to the mission and cause of the YMCA
  • Superior supervisory skills and an enthusiastic personality with the ability to inspire and motivate staff, volunteers, members and participants to create a culture of service within our Centers
  • Extensive knowledge in the health and wellness field in high volume settings and a proven leader with the ability to develop relationships and encourage relationship development
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
  • Must present a professional image and possess conflict resolution skills, and demonstrate sound judgment, initiative, versatility, and independent thinking
  • Must be highly organized with the ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other software programs, as well as the ability to use most office equipment is required
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Experience running a variety of wellness and healthy lifestyles programs for all ages preferred

Required Certifications

  • Before start of 1st shift: New Hire Orientation training
  • Before start of 1st shift: Basic Life Support, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen
  • Within 30 days of hire:  Payroll Training
  • Within 60 days of hire:  Introduction to Listen First
  • Within 90 days of hire: Orientation to Healthy Living at the Y, Foundations of Listen First, Principles of Member Health and Wellness, Wellness Center at the Y, Foundations of Strength and Conditioning at the Y
  • Within six months of hire:American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Health Fitness Instructor (HF/I), or ACSM Exercise Specialist, or National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) required
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $33,675.26 - $42,094.08
