The Summer Bat Assistant position is a part-time temporary role which will perform and assists in the summer cave bat population monitoring program.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Summer Bat Assistant (Assistant) will perform a predetermined number of passive monitoring for gray bats around Tennessee. This will include receiving all necessary supplies and equipment for this project which is scheduled to last from May 15, 2019 through August 1, 2019. The Assistant will perform night-time surveillance at gray bat caves which may include collection of guano for analysis. Additionally, the Assistant will use acoustic roost loggers to quantify bat activity and correlate data to alternative methods. Reporting will also be required which will summarize and analyze the collected data as well as quantifying the recorded bat activity.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Completion of a series of monitoring objectives within a specified period of time.
  • Networks with diverse groups, including land owners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to recruit support for the Conservancy and publicize Conservancy programs/preserves.
  • May work under minimal and/or distant supervision; may make some independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field
Skills/Experience: 
  • 1 year related experience in custodial and ecological land management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with natural systems.                   
  •  Must have a valid driver's license.                                          

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.   
  • Experience with wildlife techniques and/or field experience with bats/caves
  • Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers).
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
