Managing Director, Teacher Leadership Development

In the spirit of exploring every possible way to insure every child in our community has a great school, we are seeking a Managing Director, Teacher Leadership Development who will ensure that we reach ambitious regional program goals across the two year corps continuum.  The Managing Director, Teacher Leadership Development drives a region’s overall teacher development strategy and execution, and is responsible for ensuring strong alignment to the needs of our community’s students and schools and our program.  The Managing Director, Teacher Leadership Development will lead and manage our TLD team of 7-8 towards student achievement and stewardship goals with corps members, as well as organizational goals around corps member selection and matriculation, staff recruitment, and alumni engagement. 

This person will work closely with the program team, including the Professional Learning & Experience and Alumni Teams, to ensure alignment between the summer training, ongoing training, and the two year continuum.  They also will collaborate regularly with TLD colleagues across the country.  The Managing Director, Teacher Leadership Development will report to the Senior Managing Director, Program Impact. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

Set Vision and Direction for the Teacher Leadership Development (TLD) Team (15%)

  • Create a team vision and charge that reflects best thinking on transformational outcomes for students and is aligned to regional and programmatic vision
  • Work closely with the region’s Senior Managing Director, Program Impact to shape and effectively execute the vision and strategy to goals aligned to regional strategic plan.
  • Refine the corps member scope and sequence for instructional and leadership development, rooted in the Nashville and Chattanooga communities
  • Manage the development of continuum of content specific expertise, leadership growth and reflection, and increased partnership with students and school communities
  • Lead the creation of a corps culture vision and support the development of a thriving, inclusive culture

Hire, onboard, develop, and manage the TLD members and cultivate team culture (50%)

  • Cultivate, hire, and manage a high-performing team of Managers, Teacher Leadership Development to achieve ambitious goals with their corps members and on their projects
  • Develop a strong, outcomes focused performance culture among the teacher leadership development team and the corps
  • Manage 7-8 team members to reach team goals
  • Support others in overseeing corps wide projects and initiatives in line with our TLD vision
  • Foster the leadership of the teacher leadership development team to ensure strong contributions to all regional priorities

Partner with cross-functional teams (15%)

  • Communicate consistently with leaders of each functional team
  • Focus on the development of the program continuum in Nashville and Chattanooga
  • Support regional institute planning and preparation of the student curriculum and corps member programming

Partner with external community leaders (5%)
Work closely with Lipscomb University and RELAY Graduate School of Education to align the corps’ certification coursework with the TFA Nashville-Chattanooga corps member scope and sequence

  • Establish and maintain key school-based and community relationships to ensure long-term partnerships and sustainability

Regional and Organizational Stewardship (15%)

  • Support team-wide priorities and organizational-wide initiatives. Examples include:
    • Participating in staff committees and task forces
    • Corps member recruitment, admissions, and matriculation
    • Team meetings and professional development
    • Regional events and programming (such as teacher orientation and end-of-year celebration)
    • Educate and hold team members accountable for compliance with organization policies and culture
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree required, Masters and/or PhD preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • Ability to work relentlessly toward goals and invest others in ambitious goals
  • Managing others, through complex layers, to achieve a vision that is aligned with goals and priorities
  • Proven ability to develop and leverage relationships
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize data from a range of sources to make high-impact, strategic decisions efficiently
  • Outstanding ability to identify student and teacher needs in a classroom setting
  • Project planning and management experience with the ability to manage multiple, distinct concurrent projects
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong instructional background
  • Minimum 7+ years professional work experience preferred
  • Proven record of achieving ambitious results
  • 1 or more years of management experience preferred, including leading adults in some capacity
  • Strong preference for alumni or internal/former staff
  • Knowledge and experience in Nashville community preferred

Work Demands

  • Ability to work some nights and weekends
  • Ability to travel within region
  • Willing and able to work some early mornings, evenings or weekends when that furthers team or regional goals
