Consistent with the Christian mission and Vision of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, and in cooperation with other YMCA staff, under the direction of the Senior Program Director of Y-Literacy, the Y-Literacy Director will assume all duties necessary to promote, organize, and administer the Y-Literacy program at the Margaret Maddox Family YMCA.
Areas of Responsibility:

- Model and put into practice behavior that supports inclusion and diversity
- Direct volunteer based after school reading intervention program to improve language and reading skills
- Work directly with the Senior Program Director in developing programming, planning and overseeing general program operations
- Recruit, train, and retain volunteer reading tutors from a variety of recruitment sources
- Conduct pre-test/post-test analysis to gauge children’s reading level
- Serve as mentor to tutors, parents, students and staff providing reading enrichment opportunities
- Help connect families and parents to other resources in the area such as public libraries, educational opportunities, and events
- Assist the family of the struggling reader by providing resources such as a lending library and workshops to help guide parents in their role as the first teacher for the reader
- Participate in special events, activities and meetings in which the Y-Literacy program is involved, including staff meetings, trainings and assigned committees
- Track written information on all participants and volunteers in compliance with company policy and grant requirements
- Input data in a timely manner and follow grant guidelines established by various funders
- Manage program budget
- Participate in YMCA volunteer programs and the Annual Giving Campaign
- Other duties as assigned
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree with literacy related courses preferred

- Superior supervisory skills and an enthusiastic personality with the ability to inspire and motivate staff, volunteers, members and participants to create a culture of service within our program sites
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
- Must present a professional image and possess conflict resolution skills, and demonstrate sound judgment and initiative
- Must be highly organized with the ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other software programs, as well as the ability to use most office equipment is required
- Ability to travel to multiple locations and ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and occasional Saturdays
- Minimum 21 years of age
- Minimum 1 year experience in child development or related experience preferred; background in youth development
Required Certifications
- Before start of 1st shift: New Hire Orientation training
- Within 30 days of hire: CPR/ First Aid/ AED
- Within 30 days of hire: Raiser’s Edge training
- Within 60 days of hire: Listen First training
Compensation/Benefits:
Salary: $33,675.26 - $42,094.08
