Director, Institute Operations

In the spirit of exploring every possible way to insure every child in our community has a great school, we have begun running our own regional summer training institute in Nashville.  As we aim to build a fluid corps member experience, we are seeking a strong leader to design and execute our program operations, from Institute to events during the year. To carry out the operational vision, the Director, Institute Operations & Experience will work in partnership with external stakeholders as well as fellow team members to negotiate contracts, oversee the budget, and lead a team of fellow leaders to execute on the vision. 

This person will work closely with the Managing Director, Professional Learning and Experience to ensure strong and consistent operations in line with the two year corps continuum.  They will also collaborate regularly with colleagues across the country on innovation in operations and project management.   

Areas of Responsibility: 

People & Relationship Management [30%]

  • Manage Teach For America's relationship with the summer institute host university regarding housing, food, technology, compliance with DoE audits, and negotiating the summer contract
  • Recruit, select, train, and manage the summer operations team and their respective institute systems
  • Design summer seasonal staff onboarding programming series for Operations team
  • Manage summer operational staff of approximately 10 people to meet outcomes related to university site and school site operations, including managing the Manager, Corps Operations & Experience through the operations of corps member Induction
  • Establish partnerships with university and area businesses for corps member and staff services during institute and the school year, including contract negotiation and knowledge of fiscal systems
  • Coordinate with incoming corps members to communicate relevant information and logistics regarding the institute, while serving as a point of contact for all CMs during the school year

Systems Development & Maintenance [45%]

  • Develop and manage multiple systems and programs for corps members and staff in collaboration during the school year, as well as with the summer host university, including but not limited to: staff and corps member communication systems, dining, lodging, space, mail service, transportation, risk management efforts and emergency response preparedness, on the ground incident response & documentation, computer labs/technology, social events, copy services, procurement and supply distribution, and resource program
  • Design logistics for all staff onboarding with consultation from position-specific managers.
  • Lead institute staff hiring with partnership from the Strategy, Talent, and Operations team and the Professional Learning & Experience team

Budget & Fiscal Compliance [10%]

  • Negotiate annual contract (est $100-$300K) with university partner
  • Develop and maintain financial tracking systems for the institute budget

Regional and Organizational Stewardship [15%]
Support team-wide priorities for Nashville and organizational-wide initiatives. Examples include:

  • Participating in staff committees and task forces
  • Corps member recruitment, admissions, and matriculation
  • Team meetings and professional development
  • Regional events and programming (such as teacher orientation and end-of-year celebration)
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree required
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of 5 years of work experience preferred
  • Previous experience working at a Teach For America summer training institute strongly preferred

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel

  • Experience managing others a plus
  • Experience running a budget a plus
