Teach for America – Nashville-Chattanooga seeks a Director, Design to own the design of professional learning experiences for teachers before and during their two year commitment as Teach For America Nashville-Chattanooga corps members. The Director, Design (DD) is an instructionally savvy and dedicated leader who laterally manages our region to execute events aimed at helping teachers make meaning of their experience in the classroom, given the complex systems in which they work.

The ideal candidate for this role has the passion for teaching and learning required to leverage teacher development into opportunities for children. The Director, Design will influence hundreds of adults who will go on to impact thousands of children across middle Tennessee. The experiences you design will have a profound impact on our corps members, who will go on to lead adults and children at every level inside and out of the education system. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

Design and Facilitate Learning (30%)

  • Set vision and manage team execution for learning experiences, including at Institute
  • Continuously develop expertise in best practices for adult learning and development
  • Support and train summer staff members

Manage People and Projects (60%)

  • Laterally manage internal and external partners to plan and execute large-scale events
  • Hire and manage summer staff members
  • Own projects related to Institute program, including student and corps member learning  
  • Manage collection of student and corps member data
  • Analyze, synthesize and evaluate progress toward goals and adjust course as needed

Regional Operations (10%)

  • Lead a regional committee
  • Participate in selection of new corps members
  • Collaborate on cross-team projects
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required
Skills/Experience: 
  • Must have K-12 teaching experience
  • Experience as a corps member or Teach For America staff member is preferred
  • Expertise in adult learning theory and practice 
  • Ability to set and evolve project vision and direction
  • Exceptional ability to build and execute a project plan
  • Deep knowledge of past and present systemic inequity
  • Deep understanding of the role identity plays in leadership development
  • Ability to build relationships, especially across lines of difference
  • Skilled in conflict resolution
  • Knack for influencing others toward outcomes through sophisticated relationship management
  • Ability to translate data into actionable solutions
  • Rare desire to constantly improve and learn from past experiences

Work Demands

  • Evening and weekend work required, especially in the Spring
  • Travel within Nashville metro area required
  • Some travel outside of Nashville may be required
