The Tennessee Chapter of The Nature Conservancy seeks a talented conservation-minded forester to help build a rapidly emerging Forest Conservation Program. The forester leads forest management planning and communications with private and public landowners, and implementation of forest inventories, certification and harvesting operations across the Chapter’s Forest Conservation Program. He/She assists with developing and monitoring carbon projects to support the Working Woodlands Program and our future climate resilience strategies. She/he leads operations and management of the Tennessee Chapter’s flagship forest conservation preserve, the Bridgestone Nature Reserve at Chestnut Mountain.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Provides technical leadership and support to the Tennessee Chapter’s Forest Conservation Program. Provides technical assistance and management assistance to the Chapter’s Working Woodlands Program. Collaborates with TN staff to manage forest operations and general preserve management on the Chestnut Mountain Preserve. The Conservation Forester ensures that the Conservancy’s forest practices balance sustainability and a commitment to long-term forest resiliency while demonstrating proof of concept for novel economic models of forest conservation in Tennessee and the Central Appalachians.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Timely completion of responsibilities and deliverables.
  • Perform tasks with minimal supervision and makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and judgment.
  • Work within/manage a budget to complete projects, negotiate and oversee contracts with vendors, and assist with budget development and grant management.        
  • Develop methods and implement forest inventories and carbon opportunity summaries for private and public landowners. 
  • Conduct forest and ecological inventories and develop certified forest management plans for private landowners, partners and TNC preserves.
  • Collect and analyze various types of data including GPS data and produce maps using GIS software.
  • Maintain preserve property boundaries and signage; tools, buildings and equipment; and data for monitoring and project management.
  • Oversee contractors, forestry consultants and loggers. Monitor logging and general operations at our preserve and as needed on partner/private landowner forests.
  • Ensure program compliance with internal policies and external requirements, including annual monitoring and reporting.         
  • Gain cooperation from outside parties to accomplish preserve and program goals.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in forestry or related field and 2 years of work experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience completing tasks independently with respect to budgets and timeline(s).
  • Experience communicating with excellence with the public both in writing and verbally.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office; Outlook, Word, Excel, GPS and ArcGIS and/or similar applications.
  • Experience performing physical work outdoors in all conditions.
  • Must have valid driver's license and experience operating 4 x 4 vehicles on remote forest roads.  Please indicate this in your resume.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in forestry or related field and 3 years work experience in forestry or related field.
  • Experience with forest management and restoration planning and forest certification programs, Certified Forester preferred.
  • Ability to explain forest management and conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience with forest carbon markets.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management, and climate change adaptation.
  • Experience with prescribed fire, invasive species control, and recreational/trail management.
  • Knowledge of or demonstrated capability in learning the natural history and ecosystems of Tennessee and/or the Central Appalachians.
  • Experience supervising staff or volunteers. 
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
