The Seasonal Part Time Public Program Specialist reports to the Director of Public Programs and primarily organizes, conducts and reports on public programs; such as tours and presentations that are both off and onsite at Audubon’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. This includes a variety of guided nature walks on Corkscrew’s 2.15 mile boardwalk, off-boardwalk swamp walks, truck and swamp buggy tours, and presentations to the public on a range of environmental topics. They will also assist with other organizations and participate with community science programs.  Night and weekend work is required on occasion.  Answering phone calls, scheduling private tour groups, posting to the website, managing online tour scheduling, updating the master calendar, capturing and summarizing post-event evaluations and a range of additional administrative tasks are also necessary. In addition, support with all-staff programs and projects such as staff meetings and the annual signature event are also required.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assist with development, organization and delivering adult and community public education programs, both on and offsite, to educate and inspire;
  • Track attendance, income and evaluation data and support the preparation of monthly and year end reports;
  • Assist with delivering volunteer training and evaluation;
  • Support the scheduling and reporting of adult education groups visiting the Sanctuary;
  • Answer questions with a high level of customer service responsiveness, that relate to public education and environmental information about the Sanctuary;
  • Write and/or edit tour and public education materials as necessary, and assist with website and online editing;
  • Maintain materials and equipment as necessary, keeping all items in good working condition;
  • Support public education special events and all-staff Sanctuary events as necessary;
  • Assist in tracking program numbers, expenditures and evaluations for public education programs;
  • Provide support to other facets of sanctuary departments, and assist in delivering youth and family programs as required.
Educational Background: 
High School diploma required, although a Bachelor’s degree is preferred;
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of three years of outdoor or environmental education experience required. Knowledge and experience of Southwest Florida ecosystems preferred;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to speak in front of groups of various sizes, abilities and age groups;
  • Excellent teaching and interpretations skills for all ages is required. Experience in Southwest Florida preferred;
  • Strong knowledge of Florida’s natural history and bird identification skills are preferred;
  • Strong conservation ethic is a must;
  • Ability to be certified in Adult, Child and Infant 1st aid, CPR & AED;
  • Must have a valid driver license;
  • Outdoor navigation and hiking experience are preferred;
  • Some physical requirements, such as driving, working in a hot/humid sometimes buggy environment, walking several miles, lifting not more than 25 pounds.
