The Amnesty International Kenya National Office Executive Director is responsible for driving and strengthening an effective AI presence in Kenya as well as leading and managing the office in-country. In close collaboration with colleagues at the International Secretariat (IS), including the Regional Office for East Africa, the Horn and the Great Lakes, and AI Kenya’s Senior Management Team (SMT), the Director will build AI Kenya’s profile and strategically lead operations in Kenya by advancing AI Kenya’s human rights programme, as well as its communication, advocacy, campaigning and fundraising strategies. The Director will also be responsible for building AI Kenya’s membership and completing the transition of AI Kenya from an IS-supported national office to a full Section. The Director will be responsible for effective communication between all reporting lines, including its Advisory Board, on plans and progress on strategic and operational issues.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Reporting to: the Senior Director of the Office of the Secretary General, with a matrix reporting line to the Regional Director of the Eastern Africa Regional Office, and works in close collaboration with the Amnesty International Kenya Advisory Board and other International Secretariat Managers and Directors as appropriate.

Posts that this job manages: The Executive Director will be responsible for the direct line management of relevant roles covering functions such as general operations, campaigns, advocacy, fundraising, media and growth, and have overall accountability for effective line management of all posts within the country National Office.

Other key relationships: The Director represents AI in Kenya to the public, government, the private sector, the Kenyan human rights community, the media and current and potential donors. The Director will promote collaboration and partnerships with these constituencies. The post holder also works in close collaboration with: - Relevant colleagues at the East Africa, Great Lakes and the Horn Regional Office and Advisory Group - Relevant colleagues in the wider, global International Secretariat and colleagues of Amnesty International in Sections around the world Location: Nairobi, Kenya

Responsibilities In collaboration with relevant International Secretariat colleagues and programmes and AI Kenya’s SMT, the Director is responsible for the following tasks:

Leadership and management

  • Develop and promote an organizational vision, human rights and growth strategy for AI Kenya which articulates AI’s Strategic Goals and inspires and motivates internal and external stakeholders.
  • Guide the recruitment, development and performance management of staff, volunteers and consultants, as needed, to ensure that impact-oriented operational plans are delivered on time to a high standard and in compliance with AI’s Staff Terms and Conditions of Employment, related policies and local employment law.
  • Maintain quality control systems to ensure that activities of AI Kenya meet the organizational standards of timeliness, accuracy, consistency, balance, independence and impartiality; and standards are consistent with AI’s Quality Assurance Framework. Ensure timely reporting against key performance indicators of the entity.
  • Manage an effective and well-equipped office with a centralized membership management system capable of mobilizing and organizing activism and resources to further AI’s human rights goals in Kenya.
  • Promote and sustain an organizational culture of integration across AI Kenya’s programmes to ensure opportunities for resource mobilisation are optimized.
  • Promote a culture of engagement across the movement to model One Amnesty and its benefits. Programme activities
  • Lead the implementation of the agreed operational plan in-country and maintain an overview of human rights, social, political and economic developments to guide the strategic priorities of AI Kenya.
  • Ensure AI Kenya strengthens its roots through the growth of a strong and impactful human rights strategy and operational plans that deliver a large activist base; achieves communication, advocacy and campaign objectives as agreed in that strategy and those plans.
  • Maintain an overview of the communication, advocacy, campaigning, mobilizing and organising initiatives of the office.
  • Ensure relationships are built with key donor and high net-worth constituencies in collaboration with the IS, as required and secure the monitoring and analysis of fundraising activities against agreed targets. Media and Representation
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with key external stakeholders including partner organizations, networks, coalitions, donors and internal stakeholders to identify and take advantage of opportunities for cooperation, collaboration and information sharing which will increase the influence and impact of the work of AI Kenya.
  • Represent AI in Kenya at public events, with the government, the private sector, the Kenyan human rights community, the media and donors to ensure that AI Kenya has a visible profile with external stakeholders in Kenya to deliver impact.
  • Ensure a robust communications strategy for AI Kenya, including with its membership.
  • Act as the spokesperson for AI Kenya. Supporter servicing
  • Ensure the development and maintenance of effective communication tools to grow and retain an engaged and dynamic membership and supporter base through high quality supporter relationship management processes.
  • With the Advisory Board and in collaboration with the IS consider options for the active participation of AI Kenya’s membership and supporter base in the governance of AI Kenya. Financial management
  • Manage the budget of AI Kenya and identifying funding needs.
  • Be accountable for the overall health safety and security of the office to ensure the office carries out the facilities, logistical and administrative functions required to effectively carry out its activities.
  • Monitor and ensure the provision of internal and external reports on budgets and financial issues in line with the Financial Policy of AI Kenya and manage the annual audit of the financial accounts in compliance with local regulations to ensure operational plans are delivered in line with approved budgets and with sound financial accountability.
  • Ensure the organisation is compliant with all statutory laws and regulations and is transparent, accountable and meets all reporting agreements.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree
Skills/Experience: 

Knowledge

  • Commitment to and substantial knowledge of human rights
  • Demonstrated knowledge of political, economic and social trends in Kenya and deep understanding of challenges of developing activist organizations in the country.
  • An understanding of the civil society landscape in Kenya
  • Knowledge of and experience in communications, advocacy, campaigning, organizing and mobilizing as well as fundraising around human rights, strategic leadership and management and project management with the ability to lead the organisation’s strategic planning, and ensure monitoring and evaluation of performance and impact
  • Understanding of both physical and political security issues for operations in the region and ability to identify risks and safeguard staff and operations Skills
  • Exemplary communication skills, both oral and written, and fluency in English.
  • Demonstrated people management skills, including the ability to manage complex relationships with private and public sector stakeholders in the region including media, donors and high level governmental and no-governmental officials.
  • Strategic and analytical thinking with the ability to translate strategy and concepts into action and to review and adapt plans as required.
  • Excellent organization and administrative skills, in particular an appreciation for the importance of strong fiscal management.
  • Strong facilitation skills – the ability to listen and learn from diverse perspectives.
  • Demonstrated time management and organizational skills.

Experience

  • Proven record of senior level leadership and management success, preferably in an international organization.
  • Experience of effective lobbying governments and intergovernmental agents for policy change.
  • Strong relationships and track record with national media and funding institutions and experience of building public constituency/ membership in Kenya Qualities
  • Sound, mature judgment and integrity
  • Self-motivation and initiative; ability to work independently as well as in teams.
  • Readiness to report and be accountable.
  • Keen understanding of integrated ways of working with regional and global counterparts
