Position Description and Board Expectations: 

The Myrtle Beach and Coastal Carolina area is experiencing 6% growth in the population over the past few years and is seeking a leader who can keep up with this trend and position the Y to serve this growing population through needs assessments, program development and strategic relationships and partnerships. The CEO is expected to develop a strategic plan that will address the financial health of the Y, cultivate and develop staff, engage community leaders and Y members, create an atmosphere for new program development and continue the strong customer service delivery within the facility and programs. The Y has annual income of $3.0M and carries $2.4M in debt; the new leader must be able to balance the budget, create and implement a plan to pay down the debt, and increase program opportunities, while continuing to serve ALL.

There are tremendous opportunities within the community for partnership and collaboration so successful experience in these areas are essential for the next CEO. The new leader will be expected to strengthen the staff team by providing resources, taking time for development and providing goals and empowering staff to have impact within their program and service areas. Also, essential to the Y’s success is a systematic approach to membership growth and retention that outpaces the growth in the community by focusing on value-added programs and new locations to better serve.

Salary Range: $85,000 - $105,000 annualized salary commensurate with experience. 

Residency Expectation:  Living in the YMCA of Coastal Carolina’s service area is required.

Benefits:  Retirement contribution at 8% after eligibility requirements are met.

History: The YMCA of Coastal Carolinas has been serving the community since 1983 and built the new buildings in Georgetown and Myrtle Beach, which both opened their doors in October 2009. The Myrtle Beach location (Claire Chapin Epps Y) expanded in April 2017.

Staff: The staff team consists of 8 full time staff which includes the CFO, Aquatics Director, Georgetown Branch Dirctor, Fitness Director, Youth Sports Director, 2 Membership and Marketing Director as well as a Sports Director. There are also 225 part-time staff members between the 2 branches. Along with the paid staff members for the Y there are also 90 volunteer coaches.

Membership: 5,284 members (2,484 membership units). Georgetown membership breakdown is Adult – 29%; Family – 31%; Senior – 16%; Sr. Couple – 6%; Single Parent – 11%; Student -0%; Hypertension/Medical – 5%. The Claire Chapin Epps membership breakdown is; Adult – 31%; Family – 30%; Senior – 19%; Sr. Couple – 6%; Single Parent – 8 %; Student – 8%; Hypertension/Medical – 4%

Core Programs: Summer learning loss prevention; Livestrong; peddling for Parkinson’s, LiveFit; Health Coaching; YSplash; Blood Pressure Self Monitoring; youth sports and swim team; afterschool and summer camp.

Financial Position: 2017 budget is $2.9M with an endowment that just began this year (2017). The Y carries a JEDA bonds debt of 2.38 million. 

Financial Assistance: The annual campaign for 2016 was $90,784 the goal for 2017 is $50,000.

Coastal South Carolina “Best Place” was voted third in the nation for relocation by Money Magazine and has also been proving to be a great place to live year-round.

The Grand Strand area of Coastal South Carolina has garnered numerous awards and recognition including “Favorite Destination for a Family Vacation”; “Top 5 Family Beaches Across America”; “Overall Value for Money Destination”; and Where to Retire Magazine “Top 15 Low Cost Towns” for its Sept/Oct 2012 issue. 

Blessed with a great four-season climate, this Coastal South Carolina “Best Place” is warm all year, with consistent ocean breezes to keep things manageable in the summer months.

In the winter months, the Grand Strand area takes on a somewhat different character, relaxed and free from the crowd of 14MM tourists and highlighted by shorter days punctuated by brilliant sunsets.

While the Grand Strand and the historic Lowcountry “Waccamaw Neck” area of the beach welcomes over 14MM vacationers each year, the Coastal Carolina community has a very committed permanent population who support the arts, history, and environment of this unique and fascinating place.     

Myrtle Beach is two hours north of Coastal South Carolina “Best Place” Charleston, SC; fifty minutes north of the historic port city of Georgetown, SC; an hour and a half south of “Best Place to Visit”, Wilmington, NC; and about three hours east of Columbia, SC.

The board believes its new CEO should be an experienced leader who has the background and qualities that will permit him or her to achieve excellence in the following roles:

•  Develop and Implement a Strategic Plan: The ability to work effectively with board of directors, volunteers, community leaders and key staff to identify critical community needs and develop a strategic roadmap focused on organizational strategies. Lead staff in the development and implementation of goals through an annual operating plan. Lead volunteers in aligning committees and their charts of work to support the strategies and goals of the Y.

•  Improve Operating Performance: Partner with the board to identify issues and develop an annual tactical plan for achieving key YMCA goals and objectives to solve them. •  Fiscal Management: Ensure the Y’s financial resources are properly managed and report on its financial position. Use high level financial analysis to forecast trends, growth and stability while consistently leading Y to balance or surplus operations by growing earned revenue and contributions and controlling costs. Empower and guide staff to lead their departments and monitor and meet budgets. Develop and implement stewardship strategies.

•  Build and Manage the Staff Team: Serve as a leader who is able to motivate, engage, and retain staff in a positive and productive manner by creating and setting an expectation for excellence. Skills/Experience: 

Minimum Candidate Criteria:

  1. Accredited 4-year college degree (required; non-negotiable).
  2. Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
  3. Minimum five years prior experience in a senior-management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.
  4. Budgetary responsibilities of $1M and more.
  5. Must have the ability to develop and strengthen community relationships.
  6. Have the ability to develop new programs, review and enhance programs being offered or considered for both economy and the effectiveness in broadening our engagement in the communities in which we serve.
  7. YMCA Organizational Leader Certification (Note: Candidates not already in possession of this certification have up to three years to obtain via YMCA of the USA).
