Reporting to the Biologist, the Seasonal Coastal Bird Technician will be expected to conduct breeding and migratory coastal bird surveys. S/he will work with volunteers, interns, and seasonal stewards to help protect nesting sites against the threats of human disturbance. The Coastal Bird Technician will also work with staff in volunteer management, outreach and education, and research efforts.
This is a full-time, six month position that requires occasional weekend and holiday work. Housing is not provided.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Conduct coastal bird surveys during spring migratory season;
- Monitoring of nesting terns, skimmers, and plovers during the breeding season;
- Assist in setting up study areas. This may include roping and posting off an area, setting out decoys, setting up camera traps, and placing audio playback system;
- Interact with volunteer community scientists and provide technical assistance in bird identification and with monitoring protocols;
- Participate in other research and non-research activities as assigned;
- Ensure timely and accurate data collection and reporting, and ensure that all monitoring efforts follow approved protocols and best management practices as established by Audubon;
- Provide assistance to the Stewardship Manager in building volunteer community science teams and organizing and implementing volunteer events;
- Maintain productive working relationships with all partnering organizations, agencies, groups and individuals participating in the program;
- Steward priority breeding colonies on July 4th holiday;
- Maintain proper care and inventory of all project equipment and vehicles.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s Degree in Ornithology, Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, or a related field;
Skills/Experience:
- Experience and demonstrated success in avian monitoring including bird identification by sight and sound;
- Knowledge of birds and their habitats, with specific experience monitoring coastal shorebirds, wading birds, gulls and terns;
- Excellent oral and written communications skills;
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to lead and work as part of a team;
- Willingness and flexibility to work nonstandard hours (early mornings, evenings, etc) and weekends as the job demands;
- Ability to perform tasks requiring physical exertion, outdoors, in all weather conditions, on difficult terrain, and in and out of boats while maintaining a positive attitude with or without accommodation;
- Flexibility in schedule that accommodates weather conditions, with ability to work occasional weekends or holidays;
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint, and knowledge of eBird;
- Must have valid Driver’s License, access to personal vehicle, and ability to responsibly drive company vehicles;
- Passion for the National Audubon Society’s mission.
