The Europe and Central Asia Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a highly qualified Coordinator to assist HRW’s social media and research work on Russia. The Coordinator will provide administrative and research support and contribute to the team publicizing HRW’s work via Russian language social media. This is a full-time, fixed-term position for two years. The Coordinator is based in Moscow and will report to the Associate Director of the Europe and Central Asia Division, based in Moscow, and to Deputy Director of HRW’s Digital Division.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Maintain and help grow the Russian language presence in social media on Facebook, Instagram, VK, Twitter and YouTube; 
  • Help create and adapt content to boost HRW’s work and to enable HRW to contribute to important debates in Russian-language social media; 
  • Help generate text, graphics, video, and other images for social media, either directly or by working with the Digital Division’s graphic designer or vendors; 
  • Translate and/or draft material specifically for social media that might appeal to a Russian-speaking audience, publish material to the HRW website, and promote content via social media;
  • Support translations by translating content that are urgent and brief, liaising with the Multimedia division, and requesting translations for material outside of Russia; 
  • Assist with a dynamic Russian-language homepage and website to generate interest in human rights news and post new articles to the site;
  • Maintain and update HRW’s media lists in Russia; 
  • Promote HRW news releases and reports in prominent Russian-language media;
  • Conduct online and other desk research to support the Moscow office’s research and advocacy projects and summarize their findings in internal memos; 
  • Prepare, draft, proofread, edit, format, and/or distribute materials such as press releases, letters, and advocacy documents; 
  • Provide administrative support to Division staff including scheduling, making travel arrangements, assisting with expense reports, preparing for meetings and events, preparing for research missions, maintaining filing systems, and responding to requests for information; 
  • Carry out any other tasks as required.
Educational Background: 
A university education or equivalent in journalism, social sciences, international relations or relevant studies is required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of two years of relevant work including experience managing social media accounts is required.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills in English and Russian and translation experience are required. Experience with translation workflows is a plus.
  • Experience working with a Content Management System (CMS), Drupal preferred, or publishing to a website is required.
  • Strong writing and editing skills and the ability to express ideas clearly and logically is required. 
  • Self-motivation and ability to work in a fast-paced environment both independently and as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally are required.
  • Proficiency in computer packages, including MS Office applications, is required. 
  • Experience with a wire service, newspaper, or online journalism site or other news organization is desirable. 
  • Ability to recognize editorial opportunities is a plus. 
  • A broad range of knowledge about human rights and international affairs is desirable.
