The Nature Conservancy in Vermont has established two fellowship positions with the goal to create a cohort of graduates from underrepresented backgrounds who pursue careers in conservation, are prepared and competitive applicants for full-time regular service positions at other conservation organizations and agencies, and can ultimately assume leadership positions in the field.   The Nature Conservancy Science Communications Fellow will build bridges between conservation practices, benefits, goals, and public understanding.  This is a two-year position, with preference given to recent graduates with a Bachelor’s degree.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Fellow will work on a range of communications projects, such as developing content for newsletters, web posts, and blogs; connecting with the people behind our conservation stories; amplifying the Conservancy’s work on land, water, and climate; and coordinating public events, field trips, and policy forums. The Fellow will be given the opportunity to develop a portfolio of work, co-create independent communication projects, and engage with cross-functional teams who are working on field projects, policy, conservation science, and philanthropy goals to further advance our work on land, water, and climate. The Fellow will also be required to engage in limited fieldwork, monitoring the progress of restorative tree plantings.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Coordinates ongoing work and basic projects.
  • Duties are performed under direct supervision and established guidelines.  
  • Interprets guidelines and analyzes factual information and data.
  • The Conservation Fellow may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • This position may require travel and overnight travel, possibly for an extended period of time.  
Educational Background: 
 Bachelor’s degree.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience with relevant technology such as Microsoft Suite needed for communications, constructing reports and managing calendars.
  • Experience providing administrative or project support.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual, multi-cultural or cross-cultural background or experience appreciated including lived experience working across differences such as race, culture, disabilities, socio-economic class, language groups and economic sector.
  • Experience with web content management systems and publisher programs preferred.
  • Experience writing, editing and proofreading written materials.  
  • Solid knowledge of technology with ability to produce reports, use mail merges and advanced Excel, Outlook or Word functions.
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to coordinate efforts and organize in order to complete assigned tasks/projects.
