The Y strives to become the first choice for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility by meeting individual and family needs with a special focus on health/wellness, school age childcare and teen development.
Salary Range: $215,000-$235,000

Mission Statement: The YMCA of Montclair welcomes all. We are a nonprofit that strengthens individuals, families and community by developing spirit, mind, and body.
History: The YMCA of Montclair was formed in 1891 and the current facility at 25 Park Street opened in 1926. The Y purchased its day camp site in 1970. The 6 lane, 25-yard pool was constructed in the early 1990’s. The Geyer Family Branch opened in 2007.
Geographic Service Area: The Y serves the towns of Bloomfield, Cedar Grove, Glen Ridge, Montclair and Verona. The Y also shares Clifton, NJ with other neighboring Ys.
Staff: 33 full-time exempt, 10 full-time hourly, 593 part-time and 204 seasonal.
Direct Reports to CEO: Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Director of Human Resources, Development Director, Executive Relations Director.
Volunteer Leadership: 18 member Board of Directors. 372 additional volunteers engage annually to help the Y achieve its mission.
Financial Overview: The budget for fiscal year 2017 is $12,502,000. Long term debt is approximately $7,250,000. In 2014. the Y surplused $335,000, 2015 a $245,000 deficit, 2016 a $338,000 deficit. The endowment is $1,100,000.
Annual Fundraising Campaign & Financial Assistance Awarded: Raised $331,485 in 2016 with a goal of $425,000 in 2017. The Y provided $415,377 in financial assistance in 2016.

Montclair is approximately 12 miles from New York City with a small-town feel. It is racially, culturally, and religiously diverse, politically liberal and active with strong public education programs and a magnet school system. The area is a family-centered community. Montclair is a cultural and entertainment mecca, with a film festival, 2 multiplex movie theaters, an art museum, a jazz club, concert halls, and frequent concerts in a wide variety of musical styles. There are many fine restaurants that draw diners from the surrounding area and several vibrant shopping districts in town. Within the township are 6 railroad stations and 2 bus lines with direct service to Manhattan, an ice arena, public tennis courts and swimming pools, and over 270 acres of parkland, including several beloved flower gardens. Montclair has a direct train line to Manhattan and all that NYC has to offer.

The New Jersey YMCA State Alliance is incorporated as a 501 (c) (3), comprised of 41 corporate YMCA associations and 79 branches from across the Garden State. Together, New Jersey YMCAs work together to strengthen the foundations of community to better serve the people of New Jersey. To that end, the New Jersey YMCA State Alliance:
- Monitors critical public policy issues and advocates for member Ys.
- Fosters statewide communication among YMCAs and collaborating nonprofit partners.
- Coordinates statewide initiatives aligned with three focus areas: youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

The Y Board seeks an experienced leader who has the requisite background and skills to achieve excellence in the following areas:
- Create a Vision and Plan to Advance the Y’s Mission: Lead the organization in an effort that brings the YMCA's stakeholders together to implement a strategic plan that aligns with the mission and vision of the organization. By partnering with the Board, staff, Y members and the community, the CEO will oversee a plan that drives collective and bold actions to address critical social issues in the community while positioning the organization for sustained success.
- Lead a Team as the Heart and Soul of the Organization: Establish yourself as a leader to attract, motivate, engage, and retain staff in a positive and productive manner by implementing an expectation for excellence. Demonstrate an engaging, open, positive and inclusive leadership style with a proven history of displaying integrity, a strong work ethic and courage. Be innovative and maintain an open mind for developing new ways of improving services and expanding their impact.
- Advance a Culture of Philanthropy: Lead fundraising efforts by working with the Board and staff to establish a plan for the organization to raise significant contributions, including endowment, for service growth, affordable programs and capital development projects. Must be able to position the Y as a charity of choice by instilling confidence, credibility, and trust in the Y with community leaders and donors.
- Develop a Strong Fiscal Plan and Continue Improving Operational Performance: Assess the current operation and create plans that will continue to grow membership and programs as well as improve facilities. Provide effective leadership to improve the fiscal performance to develop a healthy and financially sustainable organization. Work with the Board and staff to develop long-term and annual tactical plans for achieving key goals and objectives.
Minimum Candidate Criteria:
- Accredited 4-year college degree (required; non-negotiable).
- Ten years’ prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or organization of comparable complex.
- Successful track record of fiscal management. Preferred minimum of $9M budget responsibilities.
- Ability to develop and strengthen community relationships and effective collaborations.
- Effective skills in board governance and serving as an integral partner with volunteers.
- Experience leading successful fundraising efforts (including annual and capital campaigns).
- Experience leading and implementing a strategic plan.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
Preferred Candidate Criteria:
- YMCA Organizational Leader Certification (Note: Candidates not already in possession of this certification have up to three years to obtain via Y-USA).
- Graduate degree in a field that supports and advances this work.
