The Program Coordinator will help manage and coordinate our MSP and marine conservation work over large-scale geographic areas. Current focal countries include Kenya, Tanzania, Seychelles, Mauritius, and Mozambique. The Program Coordinator helps implement and coordinate a wide-ranging set of work under the Africa Oceans Strategy, covering a diverse set of duties spanning such categories as: organizational, communications, external outreach, TNC representation, writing/editing, research, and analysis, and meeting with national government representatives. This position is based in Mombasa, Kenya but may involve travel within the Western Indian Ocean nations.
The Program Coordinator, reporting to Africa Oceans Strategy Director, will primarily help coordinate activities and meetings relating to MSP in Kenya, Tanzania, and Mauritius under the German IKI funds and TNC’s TED Audacious Project. Program Coordinator will also help on science-to-management projects focused on coral reefs and mangroves, and with work on improving marine management effectiveness.
The Program Coordinator will coordinate meetings with government representatives and partners (including communication, event organization, invitations, and organizing travel approvals for partners), help develop presentations and other outreach materials for partners and governments on MSP, take notes and summarize results of meetings, conduct research on global MSP best practices, and manage schedules of MSP events across nations. The Program Coordinator will help prepare activity reports for donors and develop a wide range of communication materials about MSP and other ocean conservation activities under this strategy. He/She will help track deadlines and chains of communication with key government and other partners. He/She will also help manage and track program budgets and will help ensure compliance with internal policies on all program activities and aspects as the program expands. The Program Coordinator will attend and represent TNC at various meetings. This position will be delegated to by Africa Oceans Strategy Director.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Build knowledge and capacity (within and outside TNC) in such areas as: marine spatial planning, coral and mangrove restoration and management, and effective marine governance.
- Prepare wide range of materials and presentations and make presentations to diverse audiences.
- Gain cooperation from outside parties (including government representatives, industrial stakeholders, other NGOs, and community members/groups) to accomplish program goals.
- Oversee and ensure implementation of program activities as per set timelines.
- Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects, assisting with negotiating and contracting vendors, assisting with budget development, and meeting fundraising targets.
- Ensure program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
- May require frequent travel domestically and internationally and evening and weekend hours.
- May work in variable weather conditions and at remote locations.
- Experience developing and managing multiple projects simultaneously and implementing strategic program goals.
- Experience preparing proposals, reports, brochures and other external outreach materials.
- Extensive experience using MS Word, Excel, Power Point
- Experience conducting literature searches and literature reviews
- Experience working with private sector representatives, government officials and NGOs.
- Experience with or knowledge of current wildlife conservation and related trends and issues in Western Indian Ocean marine systems.
- Experience with communications skills, experience communicating with the public both in writing and verbally.
- Experience in networking and teamwork skills.
- Self-starter and ability to work without day-to-day supervision
- Ability to motivate, lead, set objectives, and resolve conflicts.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s Degree in natural resource management, environmental science, spatial data/mapping, social science, law or related field equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and experience
- Marine research experience including subtidal surveys, oceanographic surveys, and/or social science surveys
- Data analysis skills including use of statistical programs and R
- GIS Skills
- Grant writing experience.
