The Nature Conservancy is launching a new Gulf restoration project that aims to create 300 jobs over 3 years along the Gulf of Mexico.  The GulfCorps project is made possible by a RESTORE Act grant administered by NOAA and will provide crews with marketable skills in the restoration economy taking shape in the Gulf.  The Nature Conservancy is working in collaboration with critical partners at The Corps Network (TCN) and the Student Conservation Association (SCA). The GulfCorps Program integrates conservation and restoration principles with workforce development through utilization of conservation corps in all five Gulf states.    

The GulfCorps Program Specialist (GCPS) is part of The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) Gulf of Mexico Whole System Program.  The Whole Systems Program is tasked with adding capacity to TNC Chapters along the Gulf of Mexico, while also participating in multi-state and regional projects. The GCPS works under the direction of the GulfCorps Program Director handling operations for the GulfCorps Program.  The person in this position is responsible for writing contracts and sub-award; developing conservation and restoration project scopes through collaboration with RESTORE Act Representatives, NOAA, Federal and State Agencies, non-profits and other entities; developing monitoring plans, data collection and reporting; and working with sub-awardees and maintaining quality control for the deliverables of the Program. The GulfCorps Program Specialist may lead or monitor work groups engaged in conservation and restoration activities.

Funding for this position is secured by a grant through June 30, 2020.  We anticipate renewal of the grant but cannot guarantee it at this time

Areas of Responsibility: 

The GCPS will work towards meeting the strategic priorities of the GulfCorps team by assisting in the development and implementation of approved projects, and completing and organizing multiple tasks and activities, setting realistic deadlines and managing the timeline. This person will maintain, track, and report on key data related to the scope and priorities of GulfCorps operations. In fulfilling these duties, the GCPS will work in close collaboration with TNC’s legal, finance and operational teams to ensure compliance in these areas. The GCPS will take on additional duties including, but not limited to, assisting in developing documentation for field data collection, assisting crews with reporting. Other duties can include planning and implementing crew and team training events. The GCPS will also coordinate logistics for Program-wide meetings and/or special events. They will create program materials and perform analysis and research related to the program's activities. They will coordinate with stakeholders and may serve as the lead liaison with partners or vendors. The GCPS will communicate frequently with staff in various programs across the Conservancy, as well as with donors, volunteers, and vendors.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Work within scope of program’s strategic goals;
  • Act independently on assigned tasks and exercise independent judgment based on analysis and experience, referring difficult questions and unusual problems to supervisor;
  • Coordinate projects with several variables, working within a defined timeline and budget;
  • Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information;
  • Perform non-routine analysis, research and follow-through;
  • Ensure compliance with Conservancy policies and procedures, and external (donor/legal/IRS) requirements;
  • Financial responsibility includes purchasing, processing invoices, contracting with vendors, and assisting with budget preparation;
  • May act as a resource to others to solve problems and act in supervisor’s stead when instructed;
  • May supervise administrative and/or volunteer staff, including training and professional development;
  • Provide input through project teams for the improvement of existing programs;
  • Travel and work flexible hours as needed;
  • Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain; and
  • Work is diversified and may involve other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS or Associates Degree and 2 years related experience or equivalent combination of education, skills and experience;
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience coordinating administrative processes;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Programs;
  • Experience in business (or other technical) writing, editing and proofreading
  • Valid driver’s license, or ability to obtain driver's license.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experiences are appreciated;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Experience in natural sciences, data collection and/or outdoors, nature-based activity.
  • Excellent customer service skills and focus;   
  • Strong organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Basic knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Experience with workforce development, conservation corps or environmental restoration a plus.
