This AmeriCorps position serves with The Nature Conservancy over an 11-month period to advance our work in improving private and public lands by providing outreach and education strategies by coordinating volunteers to help provide outreach to local communities and provide environmental education experiences.
Areas of Responsibility:
The Education and Outreach Coordinator implements community outreach and educational strategies that effectively communicate The Nature Conservancy’s conservation and restoration message and promote its community-involvement efforts through GulfCorps.
- Assists in developing educational program content and/or curricula for all audience levels;
- Produces publications, materials to promote and increase public awareness (not fundraising);
- Establishes and develops collaborative relationships with local schools, universities, state/local agencies and corporations that are involved in environmental education to promote, expand and implement The Nature Conservancy's educational initiatives in line with communicating GulfCorps’ mission;
- Manages the coordination and logistics for various environmental outreach programs;
- Collaborates with partners to ensure the Gulf Corps program is promoted and represented through various outlets, including but not limited to, local media, social media, meetings, festivals, fairs, educational activities;
- Manages monitoring data collection and compilation: collects data from project sites; enters data into databases; compiles data and identifies gaps or deficiencies; prepares data for public outreach/sharing in format suitable to audience; collaborates with Partners staff to create data sharing documentation in line with reporting requirements;
- Communicates conservation efforts being implemented such as forest thinning, prescribed fire, and invasive plant control to stakeholders, partners, and the general public;
- May identify, map, remove invasive species;
- May maintain and operate tools and equipment with training in a safe and efficient manner while taking appropriate care of equipment (e.g. lawn mower, chain saw, tractor, two-way radio, fire management equipment, etc.) May collect native seeds or plant native species;
- May use GPS/GIS technology to map monitoring sites, collect monitoring data;
- Performs administrative functions as required and within the scope of the grant
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

- Perform duties under direct supervision and within established guidelines, with opportunity to act independently on some tasks
- Demonstrate common sense, flexibility and teamwork with ability to exercise independent judgment
- Write, edit & proofread written materials for use with education and outreach priorities
- Willingness and ability to travel within the geography assigned
- Network with diverse groups, including conservation partners, educators, media, local/regional government
- May serve in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances
- Identify routine problems and utilize existing resources for resolution, referring difficult questions and problems to supervisor
- Must be willing to work evenings or weekends as duties dictate
Educational Background:
High school diploma or GED, some college and conservation experience desirable
Skills/Experience:
- U.S. Citizen, U.S. National or Lawful Permanent Resident
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Satisfy the National Service Criminal History check eligibility criteria
- Experience written and verbal communication skills
- Experience with MS Office
- Experience following instructions from colleagues
- Commitment to complete 11 months as AmeriCorps member
- Experience with organizational skills and ability to manage diverse activities to meet deadlines
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Basic Google Earth Pro or GIS knowledge
- Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experiences appreciated
- Interest in the mission and activities of The Nature Conservancy
- Database skills, including managing and tracking data, and producing reports;
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Experience with public speaking and/or education
- Experience writing and/or editing publications or related materials
- Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and flexibility to get the mission done
