The Finance Manager (FM) for the MN, ND, SD Chapter (aka Tri-State Chapter) will be responsible for all areas of finance including the management, maintenance and reporting of all financial data related to the Chapter. The FM reports to the Director of Finance and Operations.
The Finance Manager provides specialized services in financial management and reporting; accounting; private award administration, management and reporting; for the MN, ND, SD Chapter. The FM needs a high level of expertise in area(s) of specialization. The position administers and maintains finance/accounting activities in accordance with TNC policies and procedures and best practices in financial management. The FM aids staff in financial related work and responds to moderately complex employee/management questions and problems based on advanced knowledge of the subject area.
The Finance Manager will be responsible for annual budget development, monitoring and maintaining all financial information, (including the accounts payable system, funds received and receivable, and expense reimbursements), and processing of internal financial forms. This position monitors monthly accounting reports and key asset and liability account balances, monitors endowment and loan balances and provides recommendations related to finances in the overall organizational planning, policy development and implementation.
Duties may encompass a wide range of detailed accounting/financial transactions including general and subsidiary ledger entries, financial report preparation and reconciliation, budget preparation and monitoring, property tax reporting, accounts payable, the preparation/processing of various accounting forms and reports such as journal entries. The Finance Manager communicates monthly via ad hoc reports and analysis to management and serves as a liaison between the MN, ND, SD Chapter and TNC’s Worldwide Office to ensure accurate processing of income, expenses and transfers. The FM provides back-up administrative assistance for the operations department; is supervised by the Director of Finance and Operations and has no direct supervision of other staff. The person in this position must be able to function productively as a member or leader of a work team and be able to work with and communicate with a wide range of people including the public, program leadership, donors, and others. The person must consistently demonstrate professional, positive, and approachable attitude/demeanor and discretion and be able to provide a variety of information to staff and others to assist workflow throughout the organization. This position requires the ability to travel for training or enrichment a few times each year and the ability to work longer hours during busy seasons.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Responsible for the day to day detailed accounting/financial transactions for the chapter.
- Coordinates projects.
- Ensures programmatic commitments, TNC policies and procedures, financial standards and legal requirements are met and managed for compliance.
- Reinforces consistency in the organization's policies and procedures and provides support related to relevant field staff.
- Experience with accounting/financial issues and analysis.
- Experience using accounting and financial reporting systems.
- Technical experience with spreadsheet programs, general ledger reports and financial management tools.
- Experience with GAAP and fund accounting principles, practices and regulations.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-lingual skills and/or multi-cultural experience appreciated.
- Ability to manipulate, analyze and interpret data. Advanced expertise in Microsoft Excel.
- Non-profit accounting experience highly preferred.
- Accuracy, attention to detail and the ability to multi-task.

- Technical expertise on complex accounting/financial issues.
