Our mission is to grow and strengthen the force of teachers and leaders who take responsibility for and are equipped to ensure Milwaukee students realize their role as our city’s rightful leaders. To do this, we must develop and maintain sustainable financial and public support in Milwaukee and Wisconsin – including $2-3M in annual revenue and strong corporate, foundation and government partnerships.
The Senior Managing Director, Development is a senior leader on the Teach For America-Milwaukee team and a member of the regional leadership team. In this role, you will inspire and motivate teammates and partners to reach ambitious stewardship and fundraising outcomes and effectively position TFA-Milwaukee’s brand in Greater Milwaukee.
Most importantly, you will lead the region’s fundraising campaign to achieve $2-3M in local and statewide revenue in FY20. You will work closely with the Executive Director and Regional Advisory Board to set vision and strategy and then manage successful execution of campaign tactics. You will also be a primary relationship holder in the corporate, foundation and government sectors, as well as lead regional marketing and communications tasks. You will report to the Executive Director.
Set and Manage Regional Development Vision (45%)
- Set ambitious yet feasible goals for revenue, donor stewardship and retention in conjunction with the Executive Director by analyzing historical data, market data and regional funding needs
- Create an overall development strategy to achieve goals, including innovative approaches to engage new prospects and strengthen donor relationships
- Assess progress against funding targets to inform pursuit of emerging opportunities, determine risks, and create contingencies
- Ensure execution of operational plans and systems so that the region maximizes opportunities, meets its goals and builds long-term sustainability
- Lead grant writing and donor communications tasks, effectively creating, revising and positioning our organization’s narrative and strategic direction in local funding community
- Manage and strengthen public partnerships with Serve Wisconsin Commission (AmeriCorps) and State of Wisconsin which generate critical revenue for our program
- Manage direct report(s), colleagues and regional advisory board members to achieve revenue goals by:
- Assisting team to strategically build and manage their own donor portfolios through design and implementation of donor engagement plans
- Coordinating and executing regional advisory board strategy with Executive Director, including board meetings, communication, fundraising and partnership activities and board composition/recruitment
- Empowering team/teammates to conduct excellent donor interactions and communications to ensure the region’s fundraising efforts are tightly executed and highly effective
- Ensuring execution of internal systems to track donor stewardship
- Coaching and developing team members as professionals to maximize their impact
- Leading hiring process for new team members
Identify, Build and Steward Stakeholder Relationships (25%)
- Source, develop and cultivate meaningful relationships with donors, prospects, board members, public partners, government officials, members of the media and other external constituents through external meetings, events and correspondence
- Set up the Executive Director, board members and other teammates to engage with donors effectively and strategically
- Develop and execute pitches and strategies to reach goals for different donor segments
- Meet with and steward major givers and corporations/foundations on an as needed basis
- Make direct asks of prospects and donors
Manage Regional Communications and Marketing (15%)
- Work closely with Executive Director and national communications and marketing team to develop and execute media and public engagement plans that are aligned with regional strategic plan
- Identify opportunities to pitch creative, strategic media opportunities to local newspaper, television, radio and other sources and help prepare Teach For America staff and corps members for media opportunities
- As regional marketing captain, ensure Teach For America and regional brands and brand standards upheld across regional team
- Create and/or manage regional marketing/communications products, including website, constituent newsletters, and social media channels
Fulfilling our Mission through Organizational and Regional Priorities (15%)
Corps Member Engagement
- Participate in the selection of the next year’s teaching corps
- Participate in matriculating new corps members to our region
- Attend and take part in our corps member Induction
- Participate in ongoing corps member events and activities, as required
Regional Team Engagement
- Attend regional retreats held 2-3 times throughout the year
- Attend regular leadership team and all-staff meetings
- Engage in diversity conversations and exploration of your self-identity as it relates to our work in urban education
- Have five to seven years of work experience, at least three of which include managing others
- Knowledge and familiarity of the Milwaukee fundraising industry or experience required
- A track record of meeting multi-million dollar fundraising goals preferred
Work Demands
- Be able to work weekends and evenings, as necessary
- Be able to travel up to 4 times per year for conferences and professional development
