Teach For America - Milwaukee is seeking a Development Coordinator to support the operations of the Development Team in a way that maximizes the team’s effectiveness and enables the team to reach its ambitious communication and development goals. The Development Coordinator provides critical operational support focused around the communication and investment of our corps members, alumni, donors and community partners. The Development Coordinator must be a natural self-starter, excel in creating and maintaining organizational systems, and possess a strong customer service ethic. The Coordinator will report directly to the Development Manager, but will work with various individuals from across the team as well as external constituencies.
This position is an excellent way to gain exposure to nonprofit fundraising, engagement and communications, including development operations, donor and prospect research, grant writing, constituent communications and event planning.  To be successful, the Development Coordinator must: be able to organize, prioritize and track a large volume of projects and tasks; possess exceptional attention to detail and a high bar for quality; and be a critical thinker who displays sound judgment in prioritizing actions based on outcomes.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Manage Regional Grants, Reporting, & Written Fundraising Communications (15%)

  • Assist in writing and submitting regional grant proposals and reports to corporations and foundations to secure local funding
  • Create regional communication tool that centralizes stories and data to help share Teach For America’s work with external audiences
  • Maintain external communication with local supporters by compiling information to create and send a quarterly newsletter, mailing holiday cards, and creating “thank you” communication
  • Collect and analyze feedback data to improve communications efforts ongoing

Manage Regional Social Media (15%)

  • Design a strategic, region-wide social media strategy that will tell the story of Teach For America and its people to multiple audiences (alumni, corps members, external partners, public officials, the general public, etc.)
  • Plan and execute a social media communications plan across annual calendar (through multiple social media platforms)
  • Generate social media content to fulfill annual social media plan

Support Cultivation and Stewardship of Donors and Prospects (15%)

  • Support the team in planning and executing a sequence of donor communications, actions, and events
  • Prepare and support the team to execute actions in line with the strategic and operational plans as well as monitor progress against plans (i.e. prepare meeting briefs and materials, capture meeting downloads, prep donor follow-up, draft correspondence, track task completion, etc.)
  • Support the team in producing high quality written communications by: drafting, proofreading and editing communications; compiling data and supplementary materials (i.e. financial reports, anecdotes, etc.); partnering with TFA’s national marketing team to adapt templates and other materials as needed; collecting and synthesizing materials to tailor donor pitches
  • Support the team in planning and running inspiring donor events and schools visits including: managing logistics and preparation; creating and compiling materials; and managing execution of follow-up activities

Manage Development Operations and Provide Administrative Support (30%)

  • Assume a proactive role in increasing the efficiency and organization of the Development Team
  • Maintain a comprehensive fundraising database (Salesforce) that include accurate donor information (background research, biography, giving history)
  • Utilize Salesforce to efficiently track all communications, maintain meticulous records of donor engagement and provide team with progress to goal and benchmark information
  • Own cash collection systems and processes, including pledge reminders, quarterly cash targets and reconciliation in database
  • Ensure timely processing and prompt acknowledgment of donations once secured
  • Prepare meeting packets, toolkits and mailings
  • Manage and effectively track the Development Team budget and engage in monthly meetings with the Operations Manage
  • Track and submit American Express expenses for Development Team
  • Support all shared Development Team responsibilities, including board meetings, school visits, etc. 

Conduct Prospect Research and Data Analysis (15%)

  • Conduct research to identify potential donors to add to region’s prospect list, specifically looking for evidence of whether a prospect is mission-aligned, has capacity to contribute and whether there are existing connections to leverage
  • Conduct research on new and existing donors to identify motivations and barriers to contributing to our organization and potential levers to deepen their connection to and support of our work
  • Prepare tailored meeting briefs and materials based on research and analysis

Milwaukee Regional Team Responsibilities (10%)

  • Meet submission requirements for reimbursements (monthly), timesheets (weekly), and American Express reports (monthly, as needed) to support the organization’s financial standing
  • Support and participate in regional events
  • Drives own professional development with support from manager and others to include mandatory professional development requirements of the region
  • Engages in community opportunities that have personal meaning/connection
  • Understand and effectively communicate Teach For America-Milwaukee’s programmatic initiatives, goals, and impact externally and internally 
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • 1-3 years of work experience in development, operations or communications-related role preferred
  • Experience creating efficient systems to juggle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience crafting compelling communications (newsletter, website, social media, etc.) to invest and influence large groups of people across lines of difference
  • Knowledge of education/passion for education reform

Work Demands

  • Willing to work occasional weekend or evening hours to assist with execution of required regional events

  • Highly organized with proven time management skills and experience creating efficient systems to juggle multiple projects simultaneously

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) preferred
  • Experience with SalesForce and Workday preferred, but not required
