The Healthy Living Director is responsible for the total operation of the Wellness Department including all related areas, programs and age groups. This person will ensure that helping people achieve healthy lifestyles is a top priority by organizing high quality YMCA wellness programs, group exercise program and developing member-focused wellness staff. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develops and coordinates personal training, group exercise, youth and specialty class programs. Coordinates new wellness challenges and/or programs in accordance with member engagement and healthy living initiatives.
  • Hires, trains and supervises assigned staff which includes a group exercise coordinator, wellness staff, class instructors and personal trainers. Reviews and evaluates staff performance annually and develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Oversees the Group Exercise coordinator’s efforts in creating the group exercise program/schedule and assists in finding subs when needed. Delegates administrative duties to the coordinator as needed.
  • Create and manages the wellness center staff schedule and holds monthly meetings.  In the absence of a wellness staff the HLD will cover the Wellness Center.  The WC should never be left unsupervised while the Y is open.
  • Ensures part-time staff monitors daily operations of the weight room, wellness center, and group exercise room to adhere to all YMCA health and safety standards and policies. Coordinates and schedules equipment maintenance and repairs with the Facilities Director during monthly audits of wellness center and weight room.
  • Works to create innovative programs and activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives. (Programs such as Livestrong, Diabetes Prevention)
  • Assists in the marketing and distribution of wellness program information (i.e. flyers, website, newspaper etc.). Participates in promotional membership events and attends community health & wellness expos.
  • Develops and monitors program budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Coordinates use of facilities for program activities and events.
  • Provides leadership and support to the annual fundraising campaign and volunteer committees as assigned. Develops and maintains effective working relationships within the community.
  • Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.  (Within 48 hours)
  • Participates in the planning of the annual budget; manages and implements the approved budgets for wellness department and takes appropriate action to correct variances.
  • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in programs and classes.
  • Attends all staff meetings and related committee meetings as necessary.
  • Provides leadership and support to the annual fundraising campaign and volunteer committees as assigned. Develops and maintains effective working relationships within the community.
  • Oversees the Race 4 Chase triathlon Camp.  Recruits coaches, scheduling, and implementation of the program from start to finish.  Assists with the Chasing Summer Event in coordination with the Fort Adams Trust.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Physiology or related field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Personal Trainer certification from nationally accredited association (i.e. AFAA, NASM, ACE etc.) and/or other wellness or fitness certifications.
  • Two or more years of experience working in a health & wellness environment preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience of wellness program development and facilitation—Boot Camps, Personal Training, Group Exercise Scheduling etc.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of 
  • the community.
  • Completion of: Child Abuse Prevention for Supervisory Staff & OSHA within 30 days of hire date.  CPR/First-Aid/AED within 90 days.
  • YMCA Team Leader Certification preferred.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $36,000.00 - $38,000.00
