The Seasonal Warden will be responsible for patrolling the colonial wading bird and beach-nesting bird colonies in Hillsborough Bay and interacting with the boating and recreating public to prevent disturbance to nesting birds.  This is a part-time, seasonal position that requires the employee to work weekends and holidays when traffic around the nesting islands is at its peak.  

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Monitor birds, helping to conduct counts of nesting pelicans, oystercatchers, herons, etc. and monitor the colonies for other signs of disturbance.
  • Help engage the boating public about birds; interact and educate others. Additionally, appropriately intervene in the event of a disturbance.
  • Operate and occasionally perform maintenance on vehicles, boats, and all field equipment.  
  • Participate in additional activities with Audubon's partners, including shoreline cleanups and oyster restoration projects.
Educational Background: 
B.S. with a background in marine, estuarine, or wetlands ecology (or equivalent, demonstrated work experience) preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Excellent work ethic, a team-focused attitude, and the ability to work well independently in the field.
  • Experience in Florida’s estuaries, mangrove forests and/or coastal wetlands, sampling and identification of coastal birds a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license required, experience with small boats, and operating vehicles strongly preferred.
  • Ability to maintain and repair mechanical equipment such as trucks and boats highly desirable.
  • Comfort with engaging public and talking about the importance of protecting bird colonies.
  • Must be able to work weekends and holidays.
