The Financial Specialist provides highly specialized finance/accounting-related services the Mexico and Northern Central America business unit (MNCA).

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Finance Specialist provides specialized services in financial management and reporting; accounting; grants administration, management and reporting; or similar financial activities for a department or business unit. S/he has a high level of expertise in his/her area(s) of specialization. S/he administers and maintains finance/accounting activities in accordance with TNC policies and procedures and best practices in financial management. The Finance/Accounting Specialist provides assistance to staff in his/her specialty area. S/he responds to moderately complex employee/management questions and problems based on advanced knowledge of the subject area.

He/She performs high-level financial analysis, compares estimates to actual results, and recommends corrective action as appropriate. Responsible for the management, maintenance and reporting of specific financial data related to MNCA. This includes annual budget development and quarterly forecast, monthly controlling, maintaining all financial information and processing of internal financial forms. Provides recommendations related to finances in the overall organizational planning, policy development and implementation. This position reports to the Director of Finance and Operations for MNCA.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Responsible for financial planning and financial reporting. The selected candidate will be responsible for producing the monthly financial reports, analyzing trends and variation and coordinating revisions with the Conservation team. He/she will also be responsible for producing forecasts and budget. This requires excellent organization and coordinating skills as well as the ability to influence without direct authority.
  • Responsible for performing Journal Entries, adjustment and costs allocation in the financial system. The selected candidate will be a key player during the fiscal year-close.
  • Solves independently daily or recurrent issues arising from cost allocation or reporting.
  • Responsible for producing donor’s reports and to coordinate their preparation with the conservation team
  • Participate in the revision of budget proposal for new donations together with the Finance Specialist for Development
  • Responsible for approving payments
  • Works toward meeting the strategic priorities of the program by developing and coordinating tactics for approved plans and completing day-to-day tasks.
  • Ensures programmatic commitments, TNC policies and procedures, financial standards and legal requirements are met and managed for compliance.
  • Reinforces consistency in the organization's policies and procedures and provides support related to relevant field.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field and 3 years' related experience or equivalent combination.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Fluency in English and Spanish is required.
  • Experience in manipulating, analyzing and interpreting data.
  • Advanced expertise in Microsoft Excel. Modeling, creating reports, working with macros and pivot table. The selected candidate must have the ability to create new reports from scratch depending on the evolving needs of the Business Unit.
  • Experience using accounting and financial reporting systems.
  • Ability to work independently, to take initiatives to solve problems and to act in the name of the Director of Finance and Operations when required.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Non-profit accounting experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience working in a multicultural environment and with decentralized teams.
  • Can-do proactive attitude. Constantly looking for improvements.
  • MBA, CPA and/or CIA may be preferred.
