The Ed Thomas YMCA of McCook, Nebraska Board of Directors is looking for a compelling and strategic leader who can build strong relationships in the communities we serve. The leader must have demonstrated experience and success in fiscal management, build and manage a staff team and implementing effective strategic approaches to addressing community needs and positioning the Y as an indispensable community asset.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Board believes its new CEO should be an experienced leader who has the background and qualities that will permit him or her to achieve excellence in the following roles:

Fiscal Management: Ensuring the Association’s financial resources are properly managed and report the organization’s financial position. Use high level of financial analysis to forecast financial trends, growth and stability while consistently leading organization to balance or surplus operations by growing earned revenue and contributions and controlling costs. Empower and guide staff leaders to lead their departments to successful financial operation. Develop and implement stewardship strategies.

Build and Manage the Staff Team: Ensures that a talent management system is in place and executed effectively. The system will ensure that the YMCA has an outstanding, dedicated, and culturally competent staff. Establish an individual development plan for each direct report. Hire, motivate, nurture, retain, and hold staff accountable for key objectives. Encourage the team by creating a spirit of camaraderie and sense of mission/purpose. Creates a learning organization.

Develop and Implement a Strategic Plan: Have the ability to work effectively with volunteers and key staff to create and develop a strategic roadmap that addresses the needs of this YMCA with defined organizational strategies. Lead staff in the development and implementation of goals through an annual operating plan. Lead volunteers in aligning committees and their charts of work to support the strategies and goals of the association.

Advocate the vision of the YMCA and be the heart and soul of the operation: Actively interact and communicate with YMCA members, donors, and staff and volunteers and be seen as an active and integral member of the community. Act as an ambassador for the mission, cause and vision for the YMCA within the community and be seen and respected as a leader, with the ability to develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders, while always upholding the highest standards of the values of the YMCA’s heritage.

Improve Operating Performance: Engage the board to develop an annual tactical plan for achieving key YMCA goals and objectives. Remain fully informed of all operational issues and have the ability to quickly address any issues that might arise as well as forecast future needs. Manage and direct the Association’s operations and activities.

Educational Background: 
Accredited 4-year college degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission
  • Minimum three years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees
  • Must have proven ability to develop and strengthen community relationships
  • Have the ability to develop new programs, review and enhance programs being offered or considered for both economy and the effectiveness in broadening our engagement in the communities in which we serve.

Preferred Candidate Criteria:

  • YMCA Organizational Leader Certification (Note: Candidates not already in possession of this certification have up to three years to obtain via YMCA of the USA)
  • Fiscally sound business management approach
  • Strategic planning and fundraising experience including annual campaigns and the securing of grants
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary Range: $53,000 - $57,000 (Commensurate with accomplishments and experience)

Residency Expectation:Living in the YMCA’s service area is required.

Benefits: Retirement contribution at 12% where the YMCA contributes 7% of salary and employee pays 5% after eligibility requirements are met. The YMCA pays $300 per month towards healthcare benefits. Other benefits include a laptop, cell phone stipend of $25 per month, seven (7) paid holidays and vacation, accruing per employee handbook and membership dues for Professional Society.
