The Preserve & Outreach Assistant performs and participates in preserve operations, maintenance, management and outreach primarily in the central Upper Peninsula. The position will be approximately 80% field work and 20% office work. This is a short term, part time, 19 hours per week position, and is based out of Marquette, MI.
This position will last 14 weeks begin mid-May.
The Preserve & Outreach Assistant works independently maintaining preserve areas frequented by the visiting public and performs other land management activities. S/he professionally interacts with and explains preserve rules to visitors. S/he maintains trails, signs and other preserve infrastructure in good condition. S/he develops, promotes, leads and organizes public outreach events such as guided nature walks and trail work days. S/he removes exotic species and/or conducts species monitoring. The successful applicant will be able to navigate natural areas with map and compass.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Supervises no staff, but may help plan and direct preserve work groups, including staff or volunteers.
- Regularly interacts with the public and conservation partners in a professional manner.
- Will work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
- Will require long hours in isolated settings.
- Makes day to day decisions as delegated by supervisor.
- Will work under infrequent supervision.
- 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
- Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
- Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. Lawn mower, brush cutter, hand tools, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, GPS, or similar equipment).
- Experience working in a team environment.
- Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide, and Driver’s License).
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross cultural experience appreciated.
- 1 - 2 years’ experience in land management or related field.
- Experience interacting professionally with the public.
- Experience working independently with minimal supervision.
- Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.
- Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
- PC and/or mobile device familiarity, including database knowledge or understanding and Geographic Information Systems.
