The Conservation Practitioner I performs and participates in the operation, maintenance and management of nature preserves located at Indian Boundary Prairies.  This position is paid on an hourly basis with an expected 35 hours per week or work.  Also, this is a short-term, seasonal position from 20 May 2019 to 15 November 2019.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Seasonal Summer Field Tech will conduct summer invasive species management at Indian Boundary Prairies and at nearby partner agency preserves. S/he will maintain tools and equipment, physically manage species, and backpack foliar spray invasive species with herbicide, and maintain preserve areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • NO LIVING QUARTERS ARE PROVIDED.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations for long periods of time in isolated settings, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.              
  • Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.             
  • May interact with visitors.
Educational Background: 
High school diploma or GED, and/or 6 months of related experience.             
Skills/Experience: 
  • Must have or be able to obtain IL Pesticide Operators License.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross cultural experience appreciated.
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to obtain a driver’s license, and to maintain a good driving record.
  • Some familiarity with natural areas and native and exotic plant species
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. Brush mower, weed-whacker, etc.).
