The Executive Director plays a critical role in the community work performed by the YMCA of Western North Carolina, particularly in McDowell County, overseeing the only Y in this mountain county.  The Executive Director is guided by the Vice President of Operations, YMCA operating principles, Association Leadership Norms, and is expected to operate in a manner consistent with organizational values. This position is accountable for the successful operations of the Corpening Memorial YMCA including program development, facilities operations, membership, healthy living, athletic programs, youth development and aquatics. The Executive Director oversees the management of volunteer and staff development, innovation, risk management, budgeting and financial development, and collaborations with community agencies in meeting needs of its members, program participants, and the community at-large.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Contributes to the overall Y mission of strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
  • Coordinates the development of the center volunteer leaders.
  • Directs the volunteer activities (policy and program) of the center.
  • Leads the financial development activities of the center. Leads center’s annual campaign towards increasing goals to support community services and the mission of the Y.
  • Represents and promotes the YMCA in the local community and develops positive working       relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities.
  • Develops, maintains, and models collaborative relationships with community agencies in support of the Y mission.
  • Oversees the hiring, training, and supervision of staff.
  • Develops, manages, and monitors the center’s operating budget and ensures fiscal targets meet or exceed budget.
  • Directs center-based strategic planning efforts and develops the annual operating plan of the center.
  • Develops and directs high quality relationship-based member engagement strategies.
  • Directs and enhances the quality and innovation of the member experience to improve retention, cross pollination, and membership growth.
  • Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions with staff, volunteers, members, and the community.
  • Fosters a climate of innovation to develop member-focused programs which support the Y       mission, goals, and strategies.
  • Ensures the safety and maintenance of high quality facilities, grounds, and equipment.
  • Directs center marketing and communication efforts to effectively communicate benefit to 
  • the community.
  • Sets achievable operational and performance goals for assigned association services and staff which are aligned with long term goals and strategies.
  • Monitors monthly financial reports to assure revenue targets are met and expenses are controlled.  Completes variance reports and forecasts monthly.  Adjust operations as needed to achieve fiscal targets.
  • Maintains up to date knowledge of programs and trends.  Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in programs and employs corrective strategies as needed.
  • Ensures the implementation of the Association’s risk management program to ensure safe facilities and programs for members, participants, volunteers, and staff.
  • Ensures all policies of the organization are implemented, including financial, human resources, and program policies.
  • Serves as a member of Y management and supports the overall objectives of the YMCA.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in human services, social services, business or equivalent.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Five or more years of management experience, preferably in a YMCA or other nonprofit agency.
  • Ability to direct total operations through volunteer development, supervision of staff, development and monitoring of center budget, marketing and public relations, and program development.
  • Experience in management and development of volunteer involvement; ability to recruit top community leaders.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Proven track record of developing authentic relationships with others.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
  • YMCA Multi-Team or Branch Leader certification preferred or obtained within two years from date of hire.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications may be required. Background must include strong skills in human relations, budgeting, sound fiscal management, financial development, program management, volunteer and staff development, committee and board relations and staff supervision
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $62,000.00 - $72,000.00
