The Nature Conservancy has a long history of success since the Florida Chapter was established in 1961, including protection of more than 1 million acres of land, and working on critical freshwater and marine projects.  The Florida Chapter is completing a strategic plan which will guide its conservation efforts for the next decade, and the Chapter is in the planning phase of a comprehensive fundraising campaign to support the plan for the next five years.  The Florida Chapter is one of the Conservancy’s critical markets with significant wealth/philanthropic capacity.  Because of the scale and scope of our conservation mission, the Florida Chapter is expected to be a key contributor to achieving fundraising objectives for global, as well as local and regional priorities.

The Philanthropy Operations & Engagement Manager leads the team responsible for many of the essential functions of the Florida Chapter’s philanthropy program, including but not limited to gift processing, gift acknowledgement, custom appeals and mailings, stewardship, data entry and management, donor events and field trips.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Philanthropy Operations & Engagement Manager is a team player who excels at leading projects and people and thrives in a fast-paced environment.  The Manager is part of a robust Florida philanthropy team and will lead externally facing work (such as donor events and donor field trips) as well as internal work (such as processing and acknowledging gifts, writing and editing custom appeals, and providing support to major gift staff).

The Manager must have advanced knowledge of the systems and resources utilized in a philanthropy program; applies knowledge to managing support and coordinating communications related to the resources. The Manager works in close cooperation with any or all of the following: Conservancy staff, donors, volunteers, vendors, public agencies, financial institutions, and legal and accounting professionals. They will organize and coordinate diverse activities, projecting outcomes, and implementing solutions in consultation with leadership.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Act independently within broad program goals to prioritize tasks in the absence of specific instructions and exercise independent judgment to identify and solve problems.
  • Coordinate projects with several variables, set realistic deadlines, and manage a timeline.
  • Decisions may bind the organization financially or legally.
  • Ensure programmatic commitments, TNC policies and procedures, financial standards, and legal requirements are met and managed for compliance.
  • Financial responsibility includes working within a budget and negotiating and contracting with vendors.
  • Implement and manage new initiatives that will ensure department and organization-wide goals and strategies are achieved.
  • Manage functional activity towards program’s strategic goals.
  • May participate in complex negotiations.
  • May supervise administrative, professional and/or volunteer staff, responsibility includes training and professional development.
  • Travel occasionally (more frequently during the fall and winter), work long and flexible hours as needed.
  • Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.
  • Work is diversified and may not always fall under established practices and guidelines.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and 5 years related experience or equivalent combination.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience managing and implementing multiple projects.
  • Experience negotiating agreements.
  • Experience supervising staff, interns, and/or volunteers.
  • Experience with current and evolving technology in relevant field.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in principles and practices of relevant field.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross cultural experience appreciated.
  • Demonstrated success managing multiple projects and goals simultaneously
  • Demonstrated experience using diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships and motivate staff
  • Experience with database management, gift processing, running queries and list management
  • Experience writing solicitations, custom donor acknowledgments and dad-to-day donor correspondence
  • Experience and ability to adhere to brand guidelines and create attractive collateral such as invitations and donor collateral using InDesign and Powerpoint
  • Demonstrated success planning and executing donor events, including briefing senior staff and managing follow up
  • Experience managing a budget
  • Strong organization and negotiating skills, accuracy, attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks.
