Contributes to the achievement of strategic priorities by providing professional level coordination for state and community operations, communications, or advocacy and by providing technical assistance to staff and volunteers. Develops and implements volunteer recruitment, training and development strategies and supports team in all areas related to volunteerism.  Manages projects, creates project-related materials, and determines resources necessary to complete projects.  Makes presentations, keeps records, prepares reports, and drafts technical correspondence.  Incumbents(s) in this position may perform all or a significant combination of the tasks described below depending on operational requirements, assigned location, and individual areas of expertise.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Plays critical role in managing the internal AARP systems and programs that facilitate work across advocacy, community presence, and communications.  
  • Trains volunteers on priority issues, strategies, tactics, policies and state specific political and communications processes.  Ensures that proper resources are available to volunteers, including issue material, talking points, updates and briefing materials.  Works to fully engage volunteers in community outreach, communications and advocacy activities as they relate to the state plan. Develops and implements volunteer recruitment, training and development strategies and supports team in all areas related to volunteerism.  Conducts volunteer recognition activities and events.
  • Serves as a member of the state team and contributes to the development and implementation of AARP’s presence in communities. Works in collaboration with community agencies, non-profit organizations and the business community.  Maintains existing partnerships and initiates new relationships. Organizes and maintains effective statewide coalitions and partnerships dealing with strategic issues. 
  • Assists with the development and implementation of communications strategies.  Performs communications functions, including basic promotion of AARP, news releases, media advisories, assistance with advocacy campaigns, as well as online, social media promotion..  Uses media to inform the public on issues of concern to AARP.  Makes presentations at workshops and conferences as appropriate.
  • Develops and implements projects/events/activities that advance AARP’s strategic priorities. Manages projects/events/activities within an assigned budget.  Works closely with staff from the national office as well as community partners to achieve a successful project, event, or activity outcome.  
  • Demonstrates AARP values at all times.
Educational Background: 
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Human Resources, and/or Non-Profit Management, Social or Human Sciences, or a related discipline
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3-5 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.  Demonstrates an understanding of the state’s political and human services environment.
  • Bilingual skills may be required for specific assignments based on the needs of the membership segment supported.
  • Travel required up to 50% of work time.
