The Burn Crew Member is a 6-month position starting in mid-February and concluding in mid-August. The position is full time and will be based out of the Wisconsin chapter’s main office in Madison. The successful candidate will be a member of the Wisconsin Prescribed Fire Crew and will also provide land management support on TNC lands in southern Wisconsin. The position will provide logistical support for the prescribed fire program, including crew coordination, equipment preparation and rehab, and fire break installation. The Burn Crew Member will participate in fire operations to include ignition, control, mop-up, suppression, monitoring, etc. on TNC lands along with state and federal partner lands. During the non-fire activities, the position will implement preserve management duties such as species monitoring, invasive species control (mechanical and chemical), boundary posting, field trip coordination, etc. The position may also use equipment such as, but not limited to, ATVs, brushcutters, chainsaws, and backpack herbicide sprayers. The pay rate will be $14-16 per hour depending on experience. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Burn Crew Member will participate in preparing fire lines, maintaining equipment, monitoring post-burn conditions, and other tasks. As part of the crew member’s ongoing professional development, they will be responsible for keeping abreast of new burn techniques and equipment to enhance skills and maintain or grow professional fire certification credentials. In addition, they will work to build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and in the local community where TNC works. This may include participation in wildland fire suppression activities in partnership with other nonprofits, local fire departments, and local, state and federal agencies, either as a TNC employee or as a volunteer or short-term employee of the partner entity (such as an administratively determined, short-term federal employee).

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Works in a high-stress team environment.
  • Works under close supervision.
  • Performs heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Performs other preserve management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire.
Educational Background: 
High school diploma and 6 months of related experience.    
Skills/Experience: 
  • Must be qualified as a Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2), including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fire line (L-180), Introduction to Wild Land Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130), and one training burn serving under the supervision of a qualified FFT2.   • Must achieve physical fitness standard as determined by local Fire Program Manager and the TNC Fire Manual.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment.  
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required (e.g. First Aid, CPR, and driver’s license).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 6 months to 1 year of related experience. 
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Multi-lingual skills and multicultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated. 
  • Ability and willingness to follow instructions from colleagues.
