Under the direction of the Aquatic Director, the Associate Aquatic Director assists the director in program management and operations.  The Associate Director instructs in all aquatic areas, which includes parent child, preschool, school age, and adult classes, as well as Lifeguarding. Directly supervises the lifeguard staff, aqua fitness program, and shares responsibility of supervision of the instructional staff.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  •  Supervise the lifeguard staff, which includes hiring, completing necessary paper work for Human Resources, appropriate training, scheduling, promptly and accurately handling problems that arise, evaluation, and termination if required and ensuring the ongoing development of staff.
  •  Assists the Aquatic Director in supervising the instructional staff.
  • Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Helps develop strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. 
  • Teach 5-10 hours per week; this includes all levels of swimming. Teach where program demand is.  Guards when necessary.
  • Ensures an approved substitute when instructor or lifeguard is not available 
  • Assists Aquatics Director with proper maintenance of pools, pool facilities and accurate records of pool chemical levels.
  • May assist in scheduling and coordinating swim classes and pool schedule by sessions. 
  • Assists in swim evaluations. 
  • Work with Aquatic Director to ensure the high quality of the current Aquatic programs as well as developing and implementing new programs.
  • Helps compile program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of participation in classes and programs.
  • Develop and update procedure manual for lifeguarding staff.
  • Coordinate all pool parties.  Making sure all parties have a lifeguard as well as a coordinator to run pool aspect of parties.
  • Coordinate with LGI to make sure all aquatic staff certifications are up to date.
  • Coordinate certifications with Red Cross and LGI. 
  • Assist the Aquatic Director in making sure the four core values and safety weeks are included into every aquatic program.
  • Work with program and administrative volunteers in order to advance the Aquatic program.
  • Attend all required meetings as to be knowledgeable of important issues in the YMCA as well as the Aquatic Department.
  • Participation in registrations, open houses, Healthy Kids Day and other YMCA community events.
  • Ensure the aquatic Emergency Action Plans (EAP) are up to date and regular trainings occur. 
  • Assists the Aquatics Director to prepare aquatics budgets with the goal of improving and increasing enrollment.
  • Learns and becomes proficient in the ActiveNet computer program.
  • Assists Aquatics Director in hiring, training and evaluating staff; prepares pool schedules and staff schedules; reviews program catalogue and ActiveNet every session and makes changes; schedules rooms for programs; and works with Marketing Director on marketing aquatic programs.   
  • Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent work experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • One year of experience working in a YMCA as well as knowledge of the YMCA of the USA standards and guidelines for aquatic related programs.
  • He or she must have prior experience as a lifeguard, and aquatic instructor, as well as some supervisory skills.
  • Must have knowledge of NJ State bathing codes and regulations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and use of computer.
  • Knowledge of budgeting and expense control a plus.
  • YMCA Team Leader Certification.

Physical Requirements Include:

  • Ability to work in excess of a 40-hour week with irregular work hours, including weekends.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids. Ability to administer first aid.
  • Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
  • Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
  • Must be able to spend extended time in swimming pools.
