The People Services Manager champions employee engagement, recognition, professional development, equity and inclusion for The Nature Conservancy in Wisconsin. They are a point person for human resources inquiries from Wisconsin colleagues and the HR liaison with the global organization. They coordinate recruiting and hiring logistics as well as employee time/expense reporting and performance management best practices. They oversee the operation of Wisconsin facilities and vehicles and ensure adherence to organizational policies and procedures. The People Services Manager convenes a team of operations/administrative colleagues around shared challenges and opportunities, supervises the Operations Coordinator and co-manages the IT Operations Manager. The salary range for the position starts at $55,000 and is dependent upon experience. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

The People Services Manager collaborates with colleagues to Strengthen Our Organization, a top-five priority in Wisconsin, leading new employee orientation as well as ongoing learning, equity and inclusion practices for all staff members. They are responsible for confidential and highly sensitive information. They support all levels of staff on human resources issues, working closely with the Regional Human Resources Business Partner. The People Services Manager invites input from colleagues to design and implement programs and operations functions, using employee surveys to assess needs and monitor progress. With input from Chapter leadership, they provide professional development recommendations and targeted training opportunities. They keep up-to-date on market trends and best practices in order to improve services. The People Services Manager maintains active knowledge of Conservancy policies and procedures. They help meet Chapter goals by creating and implementing actions within the strategic plan as well as overseeing day-to-day tasks. Together with the Operations Coordinator and IT Operations Manager, they are responsible for facilities, vehicle and technology management, along with public reception, office supplies and equipment, and purchasing requests. They are responsible for creating and managing their own program budget and may work in close cooperation with donors, volunteers, and vendors.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Act independently within broad program goals to prioritize tasks in the absence of specific instructions and exercise independent judgment to identify and solve problems;
  • Ensure programmatic commitments, Conservancy policies and procedures, and legal requirements are met and managed for compliance. Decisions may bind the organization financially or legally;
  • Maintain confidentiality of frequently sensitive and emotionally charged information;
  • Conduct select day-to-day activities such as purchasing, processing invoices, negotiating, and contracting with vendors;
  • Ensure contracted vendors carry required insurance coverage and that appropriate documentation is obtained and maintained;
  • Manage functional activity towards program’s strategic goals;
  • Manage projects with several variables, set realistic deadlines, manage a timeline, and ensure accountability;
  • Travel occasionally, working long and flexible hours as needed;
  • May participate in complex negotiations;
  • May supervise administrative, professional, and/or volunteer staff, including training and professional development;
  • Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain; and
  • Work is diversified and may not always fall under established practices and guidelines.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and 3 years related experience or equivalent combination
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience managing and implementing multiple projects
  • Experience supervising staff, interns, and/or volunteers
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams
  • Demonstrated experience handling confidential information

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experiences are appreciated
  • Ability to manage and implement complex processes
  • Ability to work in partnership with others in a collaborative role
  • Knowledge of current and evolving trends in the field, preferably in a non-profit environment
  • Strong organization, planning, and problem-solving skills
  • Successful experience implementing strategic program goals
  • Experience in supporting Human Resources Processes
