The Executive Director will lead all aspects of this brand new YMCA, opening in October of this year.  This will be a unique career opportunity for a strong leader to lead the planning and delivery of a wide variety of programs and services to the West Louisville community.  Building and maintaining strong relationships with community leaders and other health advocates will be a critical part of this role.  Significantly improving the community’s health and positioning the YMCA to be seen as a key player in solving community health issues are top goals.

 West Louisville has a population of about 92,000 residents (68% African-American, 28% Caucasian, median income $25,000) plus a large number of office and manufacturing worksites in the area.

We seek an experienced leader with a record of producing outstanding results and excellence in member services and programs, with a particular emphasis on the unique needs of an urban community with vulnerable populations.  The successful candidate will inspire a vision and create a culture of member and community impact. We seek proven skills in developing personal relationships, community partnerships, fund raising, board development, major facility management, financial management, membership and program development, marketing, and working with diverse populations.  Candidates must embrace a fast paced, high volume environment and be able to develop and lead a high-performing team of staff and volunteers.  Seeking excellence in all that we do is a foundation of our work.

The complexity of this position necessitates a person with a proven track record of sophisticated executive management that includes the ability to: articulate the Y’s mission and charitable purpose, cultivate relationships and seek collaborative opportunities within the community.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Serve as a role model and advocate of the YMCA Mission, Promise, Values, and Voice.
  • Provide an effective leadership presence with both internal and external audiences.
  • Plan and lead the development of the new Y from the ground up including developing a board, an annual campaign, all programs, member services, staffing, and furnishing/equipping the new facility.
  • Build and utilize a continuous community feedback loop to develop and continually innovate YMCA programs and services including membership/healthy living programs, swimming programs, summer day camp, youth sports, and a teen tech center.
  • Coordinate the development of the Branch Board and committees; directing the volunteer activities of the branch.  
  • Direct the fund raising activities of the branch, raising the contributions needed to fund the work.
  • Represent and promote the YMCA in the local community and develop/maintain positive collaborative relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities.
  • Work with existing neighborhood organizations to strengthen surrounding neighborhoods.
  • Oversee the hiring, training, and supervision of quality staff.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor the branch operating budget and meet or exceed budget targets.
  • Ensure the safety, attractive appearance, and maintenance of high quality facilities, grounds, and equipment.
  • Direct branch marketing and communication efforts to exceed enrollment and impact goals.
  • With the Y CEO, facilitate the partner-tenant steering committee to maintain highly integrated services to the community in this new facility.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in human services, social services, business or equivalent preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • Six or more years of community services/recreation management experience preferred
  • Fundraising experience and a thorough understanding of running an Annual Campaign
  • Previous budget responsibility of at least $500,000
  • Experience in development of volunteers; ability to recruit top community leaders
  • Experience and knowledge in facility management
  • Prefer knowledge of and experience with serving neglected communities of color
  • Successful track record of supervising a full-time staff team
  • A passion for and experience working with urban communities and vulnerable populations
