This is a great opportunity to help lead a 2,600-unit branch in our dynamic, mission-focused $40 million dollar association committed to aggressive growth and excellence. This position, in partnership with the entire branch leadership team, will direct efforts to increase member retention and engagement as well as key programs at the Southeast Family YMCA. The Membership Director, under the direct supervision of the Executive Director, is responsible for implementing ongoing tactics to engage new and returning members, creating program opportunities outside of the Y facility and will build and directly supervise the Aquatics/Healthy Living department team. The Aquatics/Healthy Living Director will work collaboratively with other departments to ensure the member experience is excellent. Strong organizational skills are a must.

The Aquatics/Healthy Living Director takes an active leadership role in the branch’s Annual Giving Campaign, including donor and volunteer cultivation. Improving the health and wellness of the community we serve and relationship building with members is a high priority, as is the impact it has on member retention. Incumbent must have the ability to lead a team of peers and personally connect members to the Y and each other. This individual should possess leadership skills necessary to successfully communicate and engage with co-workers, members, associates, volunteers, donors and the general public.

Areas of Responsibility:

  • Implements program and service strategies that support the engagement of new members and retention of existing members. Creates a member-focused culture and models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Fosters a climate of innovation and resolves problems to ensure member satisfaction.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs staff and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates staff performance.
  • Develops, manages and monitors the Aquatics/Healthy Living operating budget and meets or exceeds budget targets.
  • Takes a leadership role in the Annual Giving Campaign and ongoing volunteer and donor cultivation.
  • Develops the annual budget; manages and implements the approved budget for Aquatics/Healthy Living and takes appropriate action to correct variances
  • Organizes Aquatics/Healthy Living events at the YMCA and represents the YMCA at community events to promote the Y.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports regarding programs and operations as needed; ensures compliance with all state and county regulations
  • Oversee the scheduling of Wellness Coaches, in addition to onboarding new staff and training.
  • Ensuring the equipment cleaning and maintenance checklist are completed in timely fashion
  • Evaluates wellness programs, equipment operations, maintenance and inventory.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree or commensurate work experience in sales, public relations, marketing with background in aquatics and/or fitness/wellness preferred.
Skills/Experience: 

We seek proven skills in aquatics, healthy living, marketing, financial development, fiscal management, program development, volunteer development and community partnerships. Candidate must be able to nurture a high-performing team of staff and volunteers focused on relationship-building and member involvement.

  • Previous management experience in recruitment, training and supervision of staff and volunteer groups.
  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule, particularly evening and weekend hours.
  • Ability to develop and lead new member connection and education efforts such as orientations, group workouts, special events, etc.
  • Excellent problem solving, organizational and communication skills.
  • Strong leadership and excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to set the standards for, model exceptional member service, and build a culture of member involvement and engagement in all staff.
  • Willingness and ability to complete all required healthy living and aquatic certifications within 1 year on the job at the priority determined by the Executive Director.
  • A positive, can-do attitude and the ability to work creatively and independently or as part of a team.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making as well as problem solving and interpersonal skills to relate to people of all socio-economic levels and diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to provide facility tours, travel locally to meetings and stand for many hours at a time.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Compensation/Benefits: 

STARTING SALARY: $40,000 (commensurate with experience)
