Job Title: Event Specialist, Full-Time Position

 Location: Los Angeles, California

Good at automotive event management? Want to change the world? This is a unique opportunity to take a leading role at Plug In America, the national consumer voice for electric vehicles. Plug In America is a rapidly growing non-profit organization that is centrally involved in our nation’s shift to clean-fueled electric cars. Most notably, Plug In America has an active program of ride and drive events that allows the public to test drive electric cars and learn for themselves why consumers love them. A staff of 15 well-educated, passionate professionals, plus numerous consultants and volunteers, make up our dynamic team who work on programs focused on government advocacy, consumer outreach, EV awareness and member services.

Areas of Responsibility:

As the Event Specialist, you will play the lead role in managing and implementing our experiential ride and drive program. You will:

 ·        Design and prepare for events, including coordination and contract management with funders, dealers, automakers, event hosts, vendors, volunteers and our insurance company;

 ·        Provide on-the-ground event management;

 ·        Frequently talk to the public about electric cars; and

 ·        Write proposals for additional funding for your programs.

Skills/Experience:

Plug In America is seeking a professional with a bachelor’s degree. Extensive experience managing automotive experiential events is a requirement. The ideal candidate would be someone who brings strong management skills to the job, enjoys a wide variety of challenges in a fast-paced environment, and can manage multiple competing priorities with grace and dedication. We prefer someone who is already driving an electric car and has some familiarity with them. If you don’t, you will be expected to be regularly driving one within 90 days and be prepared to rapidly build your expertise on them (as this is a very public-facing position). This position will require some travel within the United States and the ability to sometimes work on weekends (when events are scheduled).

Compensation/Benefits:

The position offers an excellent salary, health insurance, a retirement plan and assistance with the purchase or lease of an electric car. Offices are located in the mid-Wilshire area of Los Angeles. Applications should include a resume and cover letter. Applications should be emailed to [email protected], with the subject line “Event Specialist”. No phone inquiries please. Plug In America is an equal opportunity employer. The position will be open until filled.

About Us
Mission:

Plug In America is a non-profit, supporter-driven advocacy group. We are the voice of plug-in vehicle drivers across the country. Our mission is to drive change to accelerate the shift to plug-in vehicles powered by clean, affordable, domestic electricity to reduce our nation’s dependence on petroleum, improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
We help consumers, policy-makers, auto manufacturers and others to understand the powerful benefits of driving electric. We provide practical, objective information to help consumers select the best plug-in vehicle for their lifestyles and needs. Plug In America founded National Drive Electric Week, the world’s largest celebration of the plug-in vehicle, which welcomed over 180,000 attendees across 321 events in 2018, spanning all 50 states.

Why Work For Us?:

In the early 1990s, California launched zero emission vehicle standards to improve air quality and fuel efficiency. While automakers initially complied and produced the first modern generation of commercial electric vehicles, they later lobbied to weaken the mandate. Thousands of electric cars were leased to consumers, but then were taken back and destroyed.

Plug In America was born during these challenging times. In 2005, a passionate group of EV drivers rallied to galvanize citizen grassroots action to form DontCrush.com and saveEV1.com. They succeeded in saving at least 1,000 Ford and Toyota EVs from the crusher, however, GM still destroyed its innovative EV1 electric cars – despite the group’s offer to purchase the remaining 80 vehicles for $1.9 million.

Images of the big yellow crusher at work in the documentary Who Killed the Electric Car? helped to spur further media attention, coupled with persistent protests, DontCrush.com press releases and organizational media savvy. Board member Sherry Boschert’s 2006 book, Plug-In Hybrids: The Cars That Will Recharge America, educated thousands of consumers leading the various advocacy groups to evolve into Plug In America.

In August 2008, Plug In America officially registered its domain name and became a 501(c)3 non-profit, as well as the nation’s largest organization dedicated to educating the public, automakers and policymakers on the efficacy and benefits of electric drive. Members now regularly organize and speak at national and regional events. Since 2011, the organization has co-hosted National Drive Electric Week with the Sierra Club and Electric Auto Association, which welcomed more than 180,000 attendees across 321 events in 2018, spanning all 50 states.

Plug In America has worked tirelessly to engage consumers to educate policymakers. Among its most influential work:

2009: Supporters emailed over 50,000 letters to members of Congress resulting in the $7,500 tax credit for EV purchases being included in the stimulus package.

2012: Plug In America helped obtain HOV lane status for plug-in hybrid vehicles and an extension for all-electric vehicles in California.

2016: We helped to broaden the Washington sales tax exemption to include a wider range of vehicles.

Today, Plug In America continues to bring awareness of the benefits and capabilities of plug-in electric vehicles. Our members have unparalleled day-to-day EV driving experience, which they leverage to continually document the dependability and performance of EVs, as well as provide invaluable data regarding vehicle performance and ownership.
