We are looking for an experienced educator to lead a subteam of coaches in their work to develop our first- and second-year teachers (corps members). As the Director, Impact in Schools, you will set the vision and strategy for your subteam using feedback from our program participants, learnings from the community, and a sophisticated set of data, with our regional vision, organizational Foundations, and Teach For America’s Theory of Leadership as guides. You have experience coaching adults and are motivated by developing the leadership of others. You will manage and develop 3-5 teacher coaches on our team and will report to the MD, Impact in Schools.
The ideal candidate has 5+ years of experience working with a diverse range of constituents in a community-focused context, has a track record of achieving ambitious results, and is passionate about adult learning and coaching others. You thrive in leadership roles that require you to identify and harness the abilities of a team to achieve a shared vision.
Teach For America Los Angeles's support model is grounded in a targeted coaching approach. Each Director leads a team of Managers who are supporting corps members with a particular developmental goal. These coaching groups are charged with maximizing student outcomes and teacher instructional and leadership development. The goal is to see students growing academically and personally, including in their abilities to access opportunities and in their socio-cultural and political consciousness. This is how we know they are on a path of expanded life opportunities. You will cultivate relationships with our school partners and other stakeholders, as well as oversee the Managers’ development of corps members’ instructional leadership, ensuring that corps members achieve ambitious outcomes for students and the long-term leadership needed to fight for educational equity.
Subteam Management – 70%
- Manage 3-5 corps member coaches with a particular coaching focus, and plan on a quarterly basis towards end of year goals, including strategically calendaring school visits and coaching cycles
- Develop teacher coaches to lead their advisees to success in setting ambitious classroom goals, growing their instructional skills, and achieving transformational outcomes with students through the lens of Teach For America’s Theory of Leadership
- Maintain high expectations for your and your team’s results in the area of corps member satisfaction
- Facilitate monthly data dives with subteam coaches to analyze data around retention, corps member satisfaction, and student achievement to assess progress towards goals, and craft data-driven strategies.
- Manage subteam execution of strategies and provide coaching to each direct report to ensure each coach is on track to meet exceed their goals.
- Develop professional learning experiences informed by data trends to support coach development
Stakeholder Relationships – 10%
- Build relationships with and leverage network of support for corps members, including school administrators, credentialing partner, local organizations, and community members and act as a representative of Teach For America Los Angeles in the community
Regional and Functional Team Leadership – 20%
- Collaborate with Other Directors and the Managing Director to analyze data, develop strategies, and support the full team strategic direction
- Participate in region- and organization-wide initiatives and events such as corps member selection, staff learning and development days, new corps member confirmation, and other regional events
- 5+ years of work experience required, with at least 3 years’ experience achieving ambitious outcomes as a classroom teacher in a low-income community
- Experience coaching educators required
- Management experience highly preferred
- Los Angeles experience highly preferred
- Experience designing learning experiences for adults preferred
- Teach For America alumni preferred
- Proficiency in setting vision and direction informed by data, community context, and program participant feedback
- Ability to interact and build relationships with diverse constituents
- Strong organizational skills
- Expertise in effective teaching practices
- Proficiency in analyzing student data and proficiency in Excel preferred
- Ability to operate with extreme comfort in settings that require you to be flexible and adaptive
- Ability to establish rapport quickly and build relationships across lines of difference
Work Demands
- Ability to travel independently to multiple, potentially geographically distant school sites throughout the day and up to 5 days a week
- Ability to navigate school facilities that may or may not be ADA-compliant
- 1-2 weekend events a month and evening work hours required
