About the Opportunity/Job Summary: IDA is seeking a highly collaborative, skilled and hands-on Director of Development excited by, and committed to, helping the organization fulfill its mission. The Director of Development is responsible for planning, implementing, overseeing and assessing IDA’s development and outreach strategies in support of the organization’s strategic vision and growth and its commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development will be a key member of the leadership team who will effectively represent the organization's development interests to constituencies, both internal and external, and will work to achieve philanthropic goals and build a case for support. Areas of Responsibility: 

Include, but are not limited to: ● Developing and implementing IDA's annual and long-term development strategies with individual, corporate, government and foundation partners, in collaboration with development staff, to help the organization meet its contributed revenue goals. ● Working hands-on to develop and grow a diversified portfolio of funders and fundraising campaigns. Providing fundraising leadership and support to the Executive Director and Board of Directors, including identifying their role in supporting IDA’s revenue goals, by way of participating in solicitations, expanding IDA’s portfolio of prospective donors, and/or identifying in-kind opportunities of support. ● Recruiting, developing, coaching and managing a strong Development team. ● Supporting the Executive Director and the Governance Committee in the identification, cultivation and recruitment of prospective Board members. ● Providing general oversight to all of IDA's development and related communications activities including: ensuring consistent messaging and outreach strategies across all platforms; managing day-to-day operations and evaluating the adequacy of activities through goals and metrics. ● Will have exhibited the ability to understand individual and team goals in a larger organizational context, providing insight into program and people management in alignment with larger organizational goals in coordination with the Executive Director, staff and appropriate committees. ● Collaborating with the Controller, Deputy Director and the Board to assure sound management of executing and tracking development processes including reporting on charitable contributions and maintenance of income and expense budgets. ● Maintaining a working knowledge of best practices, significant developments and trends in philanthropy relevant to IDA on both a local and global scale, and adapting fundraising strategies as necessary. ● Developing tailored fundraising strategies that center historically excluded communities and further IDA’s commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access. ● Ensuring the integrity of constituent data in department CRM database. Qualifications ● 5-7 years of nonprofit fundraising experience ● 3-5 years of management experience required ● Demonstrated experience in raising funds and examples of positive outcomes ● Exceptional verbal and interpersonal skills ● Demonstrated ability to be an effective team builder and ability to maintain positive work relationships with a diverse population of individuals from different ethnic and cultural background ● Experience measuring data and outcomes of programming to determine marketing effectiveness ● ● Positive and collaborative attitude when managing groups and overseeing initiatives ● Experience managing and tracking donor contributions, and analyzing and interpreting data, to modify fundraising strategies as needed ● ● Excellent working knowledge of Google Suite, Airtable and CRM software (familiarity with NEON preferred)

Skills/Experience: 

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible development experience, including staff management. They will have a proven record of success in raising major gifts and securing individual, corporate and foundation support. They must have a broad-based knowledge of development strategies, including the use of databases (preferably Neon CRM and Airtable), social media, membership programs and volunteer-driven organizations. This individual should bring experience in building and maintaining a portfolio of current and prospective major donors, as well as cultivating and soliciting major gifts. They should also be able to plan and execute department budgets, and evaluate the ROI of specific fundraising programs. Exceptional written, communication, financial, interpersonal and administrative skills are essential and expected. A background in documentary is preferred, but not required.

Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary commensurate with experience. Benefits include employer-paid medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and long-term disability, as well as access to contribute to pre-tax commuter benefits, flexible spending accounts and a 401k retirement savings plan with a 50% employer match on the first 4% you contribute. Generous paid time off, including sick days, 15 vacation days in the first year of employment, 14 paid holidays and a paid week off when our office closes from Christmas Eve to New Year’s Day. Our year-round programming includes conversations with seasoned filmmakers and industry leaders, as well as educational seminars for documentarians of all experience levels to grow professionally by enhancing their knowledge of the craft and business of nonfiction filmmaking.

Annually, we produce the IDA Documentary Awards, celebrating the best nonfiction projects of the year, as well as the IDA Documentary Screening Series and DocuDay LA, bringing both films and the creators to industry insiders and film enthusiasts. Our biennial conference, Getting Real, is the only peer-to-peer gathering of its kind in North America.

Quarterly, we publish the Documentary magazine, serving the documentary community with engaging, pragmatic and provocative coverage of the documentary field in print and online, and linking the local and international communities of nonfiction makers.

As an advocate for documentary artists, activists and journalists, IDA issues statements, calls to action and op-eds, and coordinates with other organizations, networks and individuals, depending on the issues being addressed.
