As the Executive Director, canidate will be responsible for the total operation of the Los Altos branch, including board development, membership growth and retention, marketing, programs, facilities, staff development, financial development, community relations, and collaborations.  Must be able to engage, inspire, and build commitment to the Y cause with volunteers, members, and staff.  Demonstrated track record in financial management that sustains the Y’s nonprofit business model while maximizing growth potential.  Provide dynamic leadership that drives a strong commitment to achieving goals in a manner that delivers a consistent quality experience.  Recognize and acts on the need to continually develop others to attain the highest level of performance possible.  Demonstrate in word and action the Y’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility and a commitment to the Y’s mission, in all matters at all times.

The YMCA of Greater Long Beach is a $22M organization with 656 employees.  The Los Altos Family YMCA is located right next to California State University at Long Beach (CSULB) and serves the community of East Long Beach. With over 1,100 membership units, the current 10,500 square foot facility (including gym, pool, wellness center, fitness studios and kids club) is primed to enter into a capital fundraising campaign, after having completed a capital readiness assessment, community needs assessment and marketing study, which all indicate a clear community demand for a 50,000+ square foot comprehensive YMCA.  With a current annual operating budget of approximately $2M, an active 33-member Board of Managers, and an Annual Support Campaign of $205,000, this Y is growing rapidly.  The Los Altos Y has an average of 100 employees with 9 full time staff.  Beyond the primary facility, the Los Altos Y utilizes all the space resources available through offsite programming consisting of: Boeing Co. Corporate Wellness (3 locations), Long Beach Unified School District partnerships (licensed childcare, P.L.A.Y. P.E., SAW School Swim (bussing in elementary schools for water safety instruction and Playground Partners), and Youth sports out of a local church gymnasium. This is a growing and dynamic YMCA with limitless growth potential.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Coordinates the development of the Branch Board and committees (Board Governance, Annual Campaign, Finance, Program, Membership & Marketing, Capital Planning).  Directs the volunteer activities (policy and program) of the branch. 
  • Directs branch strategic planning efforts and develops the annual operating plan of the branch.
  • Directs the financial development activities of the branch. 
  • Develops, manages, and monitors the branch operating budget, meets or exceeds budget targets.
  • Represents and promotes the YMCA in the local community and develops positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community agencies in service delivery area.
  • Oversees the hiring, training, and supervision of staff. 
  • Develops and directs high quality member engagement strategies and programs which support branch and association mission, goals, and strategies.
  • Ensures the safety and maintenance of high-quality facilities, grounds, and equipment.
  • Directs branch marketing and communication efforts. 
  • Directs programs and initiatives Association wide as needed. 
  • Serves as a member of the association’s Executive Council and supports the overall objectives of the YMCA.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Arts degree required. Degree in Business Administration or related fields.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Six or more years of progressive management experience, preferably in a YMCA or other nonprofit agency and budget responsibilities of $1M+.
  • Proven track record in membership development and member retention required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
  • Experience with capital campaigns; capital projects and facility development, highly desirable.
  • Knowledge and previous experience working with diverse populations.
  • A deep-seated motivation to thrive in a high demand, high reward work place.

Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $84,000.00 - $114,000.00
