The YMCA of Greater Long Beach has an exciting opportunity for a leader who is looking for a unique position within the YMCA.

The Community Development branch is the home of the internationally recognized Youth Institute, where young people from the ages of 12 to 19 have a place to come and do homework, learn new technologies, develop lasting relationships and become part of a vibrant community where excelling is commonplace. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to lead the Youth Institute and all key areas of Community Development in a brand-new facility in central Long Beach. The current leader is retiring so here is the opportunity of a lifetime for someone with a heart for young people and a passion to help others. The Executive Director of Community Development directs and promotes association-wide community development initiatives. Supports the development of youth, teens and young adults by developing leaders, encouraging community service and providing opportunities to build workforce skills. Promotes the establishment and growth of the Youth Institute. Serves as a member of the senior leadership team, providing strategic leadership for community development.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Promotes and maintains a culture of inclusivity, love, caring where youth are encouraged to recognize and develop their values, interests, and abilities in a supportive team environment.
  • Recruits and provides support to qualified paid staff and volunteers who lead by example on a daily basis with genuine concern and caring for youth, family, and community.
  • Develops strategies to increase program grant funding for Community Development and provide training throughout the Association as needed.
  • Prepares and coordinates proposals for grants from government sources, private foundations, involving the Metro Financial Development Director and CEO as appropriate.
  • Establishes and monitors the financial development of private foundations as related to program grants.
  • Establishes annual budget for Community Development and manages the branch to the established budget in line with anticipated funding or approved variances on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.
  • Develops communication plans to ensure members, participants, and the community understand the case for support.
  • Identifies and cultivates foundation prospects, tracks all gifts and pledges by source and purpose and provides reports as needed.
  • Plan and direct the marketing program for Comm. Dev.; may plan and assist with Association, newsletters, websites, campaign videos, and other avenues of communications as they relate to community development programs.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with all current and potential funders and acts as liaison between the CEO and funders.
  • Expands community development programs into undeserved areas as defined in the Association Strategic Plan (i.e. West Long Beach, Hawaiian Gardens, North Long Beach – outside the Atlantic corridor).
  • Association champion for social networking and workforce development initiatives.
  • Represents the association as required by the President.
  • Directs Community Development’s programs and involvement with the US Department of Education grant for community schools support
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in human services, social services, business, marketing, or another related field; MBA or Master’s degree preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • YMCA Organizational Leader certificate required within three years from date of hire.
  • Ten or more years of professional experience working with youth, teens, and young adults in the YMCA or another not for profit organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust, inspire, and lead a diverse youth-focused organization in an urban, central city or downtown environment.
  • Experience working with volunteers and establishing mutually supportive partnerships with complementary community organizations.
  • Ability to relate and communicate with top community leaders. Working knowledge of giving and charitable vehicles.
  • Foundation and government grant writing expertise.
  • Ability to create interpretive material enabling potential donors to understand the YMCA and how they can contribute to the achievement of the mission.
  • Knowledge and experience in all aspects of financial practices, budgeting and budget adherence in a branch setting.
  • Knowledge of all types of media and its use in gaining exposure for YMCA events and programs.
  • Clear understanding of the mission and purpose of the YMCA and the respective roles of staff.

Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $91,000.00 - $116,000.00
