The Ocean Governance Associate works on the Global Ocean Team and supports implementation of projects, coordinates and implements internal procedures, internal networks and project coordination. S/he  reports to the Director of Ocean Governance and will provide financial and administrative support to the Director. S/he will support the Nature Conservancy's global ocean governance goals by serving as a liaison and informational contact between the organization, the Director of Ocean Governance and Global Ocean Team and with outside agencies or companies. This position will be based in the Nature Conservancy’s London, U.K. office. Successful candidates will need to provide proof of eligibility to work in the U.K.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Ocean Governance Associate builds and facilitates internal networks, coordinates meetings, agendas, and presentations, and conducts other activities in support of the Director of Ocean Governance.  The Ocean Governance Associate provides research and policy analysis support and serves as a point of contact to inform Conservancy partners and elected and appointed officials of Conservancy policy and positions particularly in the areas are Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing policy in the EU and other countries. As assistant to the Director of Ocean Governance, s/he provides financial and administrative services to the Director and provides additional support to assist in influencing the outcome of policy as part of the ocean governance agenda including the Port States Measures Agreement (PSMA) and high seas. S/he helps to develop strategic partnerships with relevant agencies, conservation organizations, and industry to advance The Nature Conservancy’s ’s conservation agenda.  S/he may assist the Director of Ocean Governance and other staff efforts to mobilize constituents on legislative/business priorities.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Financial and administrative responsibility which include developing and working within a budget, processing check requests, and completing travel expense reports and other administrative tasks.
  • Financial responsibility to complete projects appropriately, and assist with budget development and meeting fundraising goals for local and worldwide conservation
  • Provides research and policy analysis in support of legislative, corporate and/or policy priorities.
  • Provides assistance with preparation of program materials including presentations, memos, and other communications.
  • Works independently, working with supervisor on complex matters as needed.
  • Makes independent decisions within the scope of work assignments.
  • May supervise administrative staff and/or volunteers, interns, or temporary staff.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 years related work experience or equivalent combination.
Skills/Experience: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Experience with legislative, planning, policy or corporate initiatives at two or more of the following levels:  international, country, sub-national, or local.
  • Experience presenting to and communicating with government or corporate staff and/or program leadership.
  • Experience working with partners/government agencies and the corporate sector.  
  • Fluency in English (both speaking and writing).
  • Experience researching information from divergent sources and compiling it into a cohesive reporting structure. 
  • Experience writing and editing promotional and informational material. 
  • Experience presenting to and communicating with internal and external audiences.
  • Experience working with partners/government agencies.  
  • Experience interacting with senior leadership in a professional manner.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Experience coordinating complex projects in a decentralized organization, working across teams, operating units and functions to achieve optimal results.  
  • Experience building networks, facilitating informational sessions, and identifying key stakeholders.  
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in public policy, government relations, business, or sustainability.
  • Self-starting, independent worker who can thrive in a decentralized organization with minimal oversight. 
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. 
  • Some supervisory experience.
