The Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) Coalition & Communications Manager will support TNC’s global communications and advocacy work to build support for the advancement of natural climate solutions (forests, grasslands, and wetlands that sequester carbon and provide other co-benefits to nature and people) at scale in critical geographies – among political leaders, civil society organisations, and the private sector.

Areas of Responsibility: 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The NCS Coalition & Communications Manager’s role will primarily focus on leading the communications and engagement strategy to create and manage a new coalition of private sector actors to accelerate investment into NCS.  The role will work with corporate relationship managers across the Conservancy to engage companies, build a shared narrative and key messages, and lead the coalition’s communications and advocacy efforts.  Outside of the coalition activities, the NCS Coalition & Communications Manager will also provide some support for broader stakeholder engagement, communications, and advocacy for TNC’s global NCS activities in priority countries.

The role will be a part of the Conservancy’s Global Lands team, and will report to the Global Lands Director of Communications (based in the UK).  It will also work closely with U.S.-based and other staff across Corporate Engagement, Government Relations, Global Communications, regional, and other teams.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Development and execution of communications and advocacy plans to engage the private sector (corporations and industry / professional groups) and other relevant stakeholders in this initiative
  • Collaboration with internal and external partners to ensure alignment of coalition objectives and activities with TNC priorities in target geographies
  • Engagement with communications and stakeholder engagement teams at key partner companies to jointly develop and/or review narratives and communications materials
  • Other activities, such as: relationship/stakeholder mapping; issue identification, landscape analysis and consulting with sector experts; key message development and testing; facilitating networks, dialogue and leveraging shared resources; event planning and implementation; communications strategy, planning and implementation.
Skills/Experience: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, political science, public policy, international relations, international development, social science, natural science, ecology or related field and at least 5 years related experience, or equivalent combination.
  • Experience in research, critical analysis, and evaluating information from divergent sources and compiling it into cohesive reports.
  • Experience writing and editing promotional and informational material.
  • Experience presenting to and/or communicating with, community or business leaders, government or legislative staff,  program leadership and/or similar audiences.
  • Excellent time management skills.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5-7 years’ experience of in stakeholder relations (NGO, government, private sector engagement), communications and external affairs
  • Solid understanding of and demonstrable experience in linking an organisation’s business strategy and commercial realities context to the role of communications initiatives in driving success in the marketplace
  • Progressive experience in relevant communications and/or stakeholder engagement roles with both internal and external audiences that have included developing content around complex issues including energy, land use, and climate change 
  • Ability to work across diverse parts of the organisation to accomplish access to content necessary to create and refine communications products
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritise multi-channel delivery of communications projects, including experience with the distinct demands of digital channels
  • Experience with evaluating impacts of communications initiatives and adjusting accordingly
  • Good record of working with and advising other managers in the business, particularly in translating complex technical aspects of the business to communications content for broader audiences
  • Ability to create an effective communication network and build collaborative relationships in a matrixed organisation
  • Creative thinker, good written and oral presentation skills, appreciation of design and visual communications
  • Ability to manage tight deadlines and maintain high levels of professionalism under pressure
  • Strong people orientation, interpersonal sensitivity, inclusive style
  • Flexibility and resiliency to cope with changing priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Languages needed: Must be fluent in English
  • Willingness to travel 25% of time (some international)
