Context: The Conservation Assistant will perform various administrative and conservation duties to support operations of the chapter office, Chapter Director and Conservation Committee.

Scope: The Conservation Assistant will perform (1) administrative and general office duties, coordinate chapter activities and meetings, interact with volunteers, and respond to routine inquiries from members, volunteers, and the general public, and (2) conservation duties including researching chapter conservation issues, writing reports and letters, attending and speaking at meetings.

This position is part-time, 25 hrs/week for 3 months, then 15 hrs/week for 2 months, then 5 hrs/week for 3 months.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Administrative duties:

  • Answer chapter phone and email
  • Handle incoming and outgoing mail
  • Maintain office and building calendars for rooms, equipment and conference line reservations
  • Membership communication, re: members’ needs; questions, activity requests and membership database updates including entries for donation thank you notes
  • Assist with preparing tabling supplies
  • Mail forward to Hiker’s Hut Treasurer, as well as Paddlers, Backpack and Ski Touring outing sections.
  • Monitor Hikers Hut Online Reservations; guests that have charge cards, date changes, non-payment or reschedule issues
  • Calendar entries for leaders and groups
  • Purchase Office supplies
  • Post office runs

Conservation duties:

  • Preparing marketing material
  • Organizing community meetings
  • E-mail city council and staff
  • Volunteer outreach
  • Building a name brand on social and traditional media (e.g. press releases).
  • Research chapter conservation issues
  • Write conservation articles and post via social media
  • Speak at agency meetings: city councils, planning commissions, etc.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to interact effectively with volunteers, members, staff and the general public.
  • Experience working with local conservation organizations.
  • Experience preparing for and speaking at city planning and/or city council meetings
  • Experience researching and writing about local conservation issues
  • Knowledge of local legal and political processes

Preferred

  • Evidence of published conservation articles
  • Experience researching and writing letters to city planning commissions and/or city councils
  • Experience analyzing development proposals
Compensation/Benefits: 

Sierra Club is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization. Sierra Club employees are not eligible to participate in the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.  Sierra Club does not sponsor H1B visas.
