The Public Policy Manager manages state governmental affairs and advocacy efforts in Arkansas as well as the Ambassador Program for Congressional Advocacy.  The Manager will promote the mission of the organization by building and mobilizing grassroots advocacy, interacting with policy makers, committees, and coalitions, and communicating the Association's issues and public policy priorities. This position serves as an advisor for public policy planning and advocacy implementation efforts in Arkansas. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Provides staff leadership for the development of public policy platform priorities at the state level in collaboration with director of programs and the national public policy office.
  • Oversees all efforts and activities to advance the state-level public policy priorities, including working with state elected officials, collaborative partners, and state agencies, including the public health department, as appropriate.
  • Recruits, trains, and mobilizes advocates to advance both state and federal public policy priority issues. 
  • Monitors committee meetings and legislative action during the state legislative session as well as in between sessions.
  • Plans and implements Alzheimer's Advocacy Day at the state capitol.
  • Manages the volunteer Alzheimer's Association Ambassadors Program to strengthen relationships with each members of Congress from the state.
  • Provides updates of state and federal legislative matters pertaining to Alzheimer's to all Association staff in the state, chapter boards, Ambassadors and other advocates.
  • Develops alliances with similar organizations in order to advance issues of importance to the Association at the state level.
  • Serve actively in select number of community coalitions and joint advocacy efforts as assigned, providing leadership based on both state and national public policy initiatives and ensuring that our health care system reflects awareness of and ability to serve individuals with Alzheimer's disease.
  • Represents the chapter at public forums, conferences, state task forces, government agencies, etc. on public policy issues as needed.
  • Recruits and coordinates volunteer advocates from the state to attend the Public Policy Forum in Washington, D.C.
  • Supports staff and volunteers at Walks to End Alzheimer’s (and other events) to recruit and engage advocates.  . 
  • Manages databases to communicate with advocates, track activities and engagements, monitor legislative issues and activities, and insure advocacy compliance with National standards.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • State-level government affairs experience and/or grassroots advocacy.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse population and with a high level of integrity, diplomacy and initiative. 
  • Experience working with volunteers preferred.
  • Familiar with senior/elder issues preferred. 
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven self-starter with excellent judgment and careful attention to detail.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Ability/willingness for frequent travel. 
  • Proficient user of personal computer, Microsoft software applications, and aptitude to learn new database programs. 
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends if necessary.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.  Must be in possession of a valid driver's license and insurance.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time and move about to retrieve files.
  • Ability to occasionally lift 25 lbs., bend and stoop.
