Associate State Director, Communications and Community Outreach

Works collaboratively in a fast paced and demanding environment with staff and volunteers in Arkansas  (AR) to develop AARP’s public presence across the state and in local communities by:  establishing the framework for positioning AARP with the media, the membership and opinion leaders; developing strategic communications plans and key messaging; developing community outreach strategies; overseeing media relations and social media channels; implementing communications tools, including new technology; training and partnering with volunteers to build communications reach; supporting collaborative relationships with other organizations, and supporting the national office in launching national initiatives.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Responsible for development and implementation of integrated brand strategies, including paid advertising, events, local sponsorships and collateral materials.  Manages the execution of communications across the State. Develops written communications to support the overall strategy across multiple channels and to targeted audiences. Maintains communication with management regarding work being done in the community, with key partners, and how work is building on the state plan. Develops and maintains key contacts and relationships, including with policy makers in the community/state.  Builds and organizes grassroots and key contacts that have a real and sustained impact at the community level.  Plans and executes AARP community campaigns and assists with advocacy campaigns that include grassroots mobilization and leadership, media, community resources, and organization at the state and national levels.
  • Serves as a member of the state team based out of Little Rock and is responsible for the development and implementation of AARP’s integrated media, web/social media presence and community engagement.  This includes the development and implementation of strategic plans and activities related to AARP AR priority issues, integrated advocacy campaigns, message development and strategic counsel for staff and volunteer team members.  
  • Develops membership communications that seamlessly integrate with AARP priorities and communications strategies. Proactively generates positive earned media coverage in new and creative ways while leveraging the immediacy of news and other information.
  • Expands awareness and enhances AARP’s reputation among non-traditional partners, including community leaders, businesses, educators, and policy makers.  Initiates new relationships and sustains existing ones. Makes presentations at workshops and conferences, as appropriate.
  • Maintains an in-depth knowledge of AARP’s enterprise wide strategic goals, anticipating and addressing opportunities as they arise. 
  • Works with state, regional and national staff to promote AARP’s strategic issues and priorities in the state and community.  Facilitates interaction and communication with national office issue experts to provide technical assistance and ensure the proper resources are available for staff and volunteers, including issue material, talking points, updates and briefing material.  
  • Uses data driven analytics and AARP tools to target audiences and track results.
  • Recruits, orients, trains, evaluates, and manages volunteers as needed.  Supports volunteers, providing coaching and technical assistance in the community and areas of communications skill development.  Trains volunteers on priority issues, strategies, tactics, policies and state specific political and communications processes in accordance with the State and National goals of AARP. Participates in the organization of volunteer recognition activities and events.
  • Serves as a media spokesperson as needed ensuring AARP is seen as a visible force in community service and public policy.  
  • Demonstrates AARP values in all interactions.
Educational Background: 
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Non-profit Management  or a related discipline and 5+ years of experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.  
Skills/Experience: 

Demonstrated strong skills: 

  • Understanding of campaigns, media relations, communications, and public relations;
  • Writing skills; 
  • Familiarity of the state’s political and community service environment; and
  • Social media and familiarity with new media platforms.
  • Familiarity of the state’s political and community service environment (e.g., community service leaders, partners, organizations, critical state-wide community service needs, legislative leaders, government officials, major stakeholders, etc.) is a plus.  
  • Approximately 30% in state travel.  Night and weekend hours as required to meet state office needs.
