The Engine Boss (ENGB) oversees a Type 6 engine crew (2-3 Burn Crew Members) in wildland fire activities, as directed by a Burn Boss, or other command position.  Position will begin on February 11, 2019 and terminate on April 19, 2019. Housing will be available.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The ENGB is the lead for a Type 6 engine and/or a UTV engine and will supervise 1-2 firefighters. The crew will travel extensively between throughout eastern Kentucky and eastern Tennessee. The ENGB will supervise the crew during fire line preparation, equipment maintenance, Rx. fire implementation, post-burn monitoring, and other tasks.  May perform other preserve management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire.

As part of the ENGB’s ongoing professional development, they will be responsible for keeping abreast of new burn techniques and equipment to enhance skills and maintain/grow professional fire certification credentials.  In addition, they shall work to build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and in the local community where the Conservancy works. This may include participation in wildland fire suppression activities in partnership with other non-profits, local fire departments, and local, state and federal agencies, either as a TNC employee, or as a volunteer or short-term employee of the partner entity (such as an Administratively Determined, short term federal employee).

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Supervise and efficiently coordinate the activities of seasonal firefighters.
  • Serve as a liaison between crew and Conservancy and partnering fire management agencies.
  • Function as both leader and member of a work team, in a high stress team environment.
  • Maintain detailed records of burn crew time and expenses, and make sure these are submitted to designated support staff in a timely manner. Serve as purchaser for crew during travel.
  • Operate and maintain fire equipment, including 4wd trucks, ATV’s, UTV’s, portable pumps, tractors, backpack blowers, chain saws, and GPS units.
  • Convey work instructions to Burn Crew members and maintain a cohesive, efficient, working team.              
  • Monitor the progress of Burn Crew Members toward achieving fire management goals.
  • Makes decisions on the fire line based upon evaluation of fire behavior, available resources and judgment.
  • Perform other preserve management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
Educational Background: 
High school diploma and 1-year training in fire operations, science-related field or similar field or related experience in land management. 
Skills/Experience: 
  • NWCG qualified Single Resource Boss – Engine (ENGB).  Requirements for ENGB can be found in the Conservancy Fire Management Manual at: http://tncfiremanual.org/SingleResource.htm.
  • Must achieve physical fitness standards – arduous pack test as a condition of employment (3-mile hike with a 45 pound pack over level terrain in 45 minutes or less).
  • Experience operating and maintaining various types of equipment.
  • Experience supervising staff or volunteers is required                                                            
  • May be required to obtain related licenses and certifications such as CPR and herbicide application.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3-5 years training in fire operations or other science-related field or related experience in land management or similar field. 
  • Ability and willingness to work in a team environment.            
  • Ability to evaluate inputs in a rapidly changing work environment and make decisions that affect the safety and work of firefighters within squad.                      
  • PC familiarity, including database knowledge, in order to maintain preserve records.
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross cultural experience appreciated
