The Chief of Staff (CoS) works to extend the leadership of the Executive Director (ED) to maximize our impact in Las Vegas. In doing so, the CoS leads our talent, culture & communications, and operations work for the Las Vegas regional team. Their reach is extended through the management of an Associate of Operations and Executive Support and a Manager of Staff Engagement and Operations. They prepare our ED to lead our team and board and act as the glue that holds our team together to ensure TFA LV is a Great Place to Work. 

In order to be successful, a leader in this role is able to balance being in a support role to the ED and play a leadership role for our staff.  A great CoS is an organized, natural self-starter and work with a strong orientation to culture, systems-level thinking, team management, and functional operations. The CoS will need to build working trust with all staff 1:1. An obsession to detail, the ability to anticipate problems, and a collaborative work ethic are critical in this role. The CoS will report to the Executive Director.

Areas of Responsibility: 

ED Support  (10%)

  • Deliver ongoing team status updates with the ED and flag the most pressing issues for the ED to address internally, having already prepared them with proposed solutions. More often, move challenges to solutions without expecting the ED to do so. 
  • Prepare the ED to maintain strength of relationship with teammates and be a visible, inspiring, and respected leader for our staff. Guide his use of time at full team meetings, retreats, 1:1 check-ins with staff, etc.

Talent (25%)

  • Creates and executes the strategy for our staff life cycle. From recruiting to supporting hiring, on-boarding, and transitioning our staff members, the CoS builds the team that will thrive in Las Vegas.
  • Leads the proposal of headcount structures to meet the current and future team needs (approved by our regional leadership team).
  • Sets the vision for and facilitates teamwide performance management (Elevate), onboarding, and professional development.

Operations (15%)

  • Ensure fiscal compliance and stewardship as our regional “chief financial officer”. 
  • Innovate and simplify operational processes in our office and on our team to increase impact as our “chief operations officer”.
  • Manage Associate and Manager to meet their goals in managing our office, supply, budget, travel, expense, time allocation, and other operational goals.

Culture & Communication (30%)

  • Creates and executes on a plan that builds trust, facilitates productive conflict, creates processes for accountability, and ultimately ensure our team is committed to and sees results.
  • Creates and executes on a plan that builds the team’s capacity to lead through our core values and commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness.
  • Ultimately ensures our team is a Great Place to Work (91% overall) for all of our staff (focus on equitable results here).
  • Be our “chief alignment officer”. Through consistent communications, ensure the team is aligned on our priorities, progress, key decisions, and required actions. This may include the launch of a digital team hub, email communications, use of team meetings, etc.

Fulfilling our Mission through Organizational and Regional Priorities (20%) 

  • Help with the selection and matriculation of the next year’s teaching corps 
  • Own your own development in core values and DEI focus with help from manager.
  • Help with cross-functional team-wide initiatives that align with our regional priorities and strategies. 
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degrees in Organizational Management or Education Leadership preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least five years of work experience 
  • Previous experience managing others required
  • Experience managing teams and working in Human Assets and/or Budgeting preferred
  • Experience in education non-profits like Teach For America preferred
  • Strong ability to manage team execution and track progress.
  • Impeccable judgment and ability to manage confidential information with the utmost integrity 
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to make timely decisions and demonstrate good judgment 
  • Exceptional customer service orientation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to tailor approach toward the perspective of others

Work Demands

  •  Occasional weekend and evening work to support events. 
  • Presence in the office during normal business hours is required.
