Conservation Organizer (Clean Transportation for All)

Duration: This is a part-time position (~20 hours per week for 6 months) based in either Reno or Las Vegas depending on the applicant’s preference.  The organizer may work from home but will also be expected to work at the Sierra Club office in Las Vegas or Reno at least one day a week. Benefits will be offered with an employee contribution.

Context: Transportation is now the nation’s leading source of climate-disrupting pollution. In Nevada, the next big climate movement must incorporate progress toward a modern, clean, and equitable  transportation system. The Toiyabe Chapter is searching for a Conservation Representative who will implement specific campaigns and build Sierra Club’s capacity in Nevada to advance 21st Century transportation solutions in Nevada to clean our air and create safe, healthy, climate-resilient communities.

Scope: The national Sierra Club’s Clean Transportation for All (CTFA) campaign is working to ensure we all benefit from a 21st-century clean transportation system with access to cars, trucks, and buses that rely on little to no oil at all as well as to clean public transit—and other local clean transportation solutions—that includes equity and justice. The Sierra Club Toiyabe Chapter has received funding from CTFA to carry out this campaign in Nevada.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Conservation Representative will work with the Chapter Director, lead volunteers and Sierra Club’s national Clean Transportation for All team to pursue the following outcomes:

  • Recruit and train volunteer leaders interested in working for a modern, clean transportation system in Nevada
  • Support Nevada in adopting Low- and Zero-Emission Vehicle standards for automobiles
  • Implement Nevada’s Senate Bill 299 by supporting the installation of Electric Vehicle infrastructure and electric school buses in key schools in Nevada.

Strategies will include:

  • Working with volunteer team leaders to schedule, formulate agendas for, and lead initial Transportation Team meetings and other events
  • Recruiting, informing and empowering volunteer advocates through one-on-one meetings, social media, trainings, and public events
  • Support activist volunteers in advocating the above transportation policies to decision-makers like the Governor, school boards, and the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada
  • Formulating informative stories on website, blog, social media, and public forums (in Spanish for key campaigns)
  • Teaming with partners (Chispa NV, Mom’s Clean Air Force) to host activist trainings (including in communities of color), with an emphasis on powerful storytelling and compelling testimony
  • Working with Chapter and National staff to write press releases newsletters, flyers, etc. to keep the Club membership and the general public informed
  • Assisting with grant reporting and fundraising as assigned
  • Limited travel required
  • Performing miscellaneous duties as assigned
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience in organizing diverse, grassroots volunteers
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Expertise, experience, or strong interest in transportation policy, vehicle and highway electrification, environmental policy, climate disruption and solutions; or related fields preferred
  • Fluency in Spanish helpful but not required
  • Excellent computer skills required
