The Michigan Climate and Energy Associate will focus on developing energy efficiency and renewable energy projects with school and faith-based communities, in partnership with several organizations and institutions with shared goals. The goals for this position include helping these communities (school and churches) realize the tangible economic benefits of energy efficiency and enhancing community conversations about the practical benefits of conservation and policies that incentivize economic, social, and environmental solutions and co-benefits for all people. Additionally, this position will Effectively communicate the successes of school- and church-based energy programs in a manner that demonstrates the benefits of these programs to community, state and federal-level political leaders.
The Climate and Energy Associate will design and implement a new strategic program for the Michigan Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. Essential functions will require coordination with TNC’s divisional climate strategy leadership, and multiple chapter departments. This position is expected to build external networks and strategic partnerships with local organizations, institutions, and corporations, as well as local/state/federal government officials. Implements and manages efficient and effective communications, media and engagement plans to help drive organizational strategy, in coordination with chapter departments, and responsible for coordination of meetings, agendas, and presentations. Responsibilities also include conducting research and policy analysis, and volunteer cultivation and management.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- May supervise administrative staff and/or volunteers, interns, or temporary staff.
- Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development, and meeting fundraising targets.
- Maintains regular contact with local, institutional, and/or corporate representatives on matters pertaining to administrative, legislative, and/or corporate actions and agreements.
- Develops strategic partnerships with relevant groups to implement energy efficiency and renewable energy projects and influence legislation.
- Ability to persuasively convey the mission of The Nature Conservancy to diverse groups including donors, board members, and the public.
- Demonstrated ability in managing the fiduciary aspects of planning and delivery of budgets.
- Excellent writing, presentation, communication, mediation and negotiation skills.
- Familiarity with communication technologies and best practices.
- Experience and/or understanding of communication best practices at a decentralized organization a plus.
- Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
- Serves as a team leader for assigned projects and coordinate the work of others.
- Ensures that the program complies with country lobbying laws and regulations.
- May need to gain cooperation from individuals or groups (inside and outside the Conservancy) over whom there is no direct authority in order to accomplish program goals.
- Experience in Michigan energy policy, history of energy efficiency programming and incentives in Michigan.
- Experience with or familiarity with effective policies that incentivize private market approaches to energy efficiency and renewable energy investments.
- Experience in facilitation, strategy development, and energy policy.
- Experience presenting to and/or communicating with business, government or legislative staff and/or program leadership.
- Experience in designing, implementing and directing multiple complex projects and ensuring program accountability.
- Communications experience including preparing and presenting project proposals, and developing written communications.
- Experience working with corporate or NGO partners, and government agencies.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural experience appreciated.
- Master’s degree or equivalent experience working in energy policy preferred.
- Supervisory experience, including ability to set objectives and manage performance (if required).
- Familiarity with social, economic and political conditions and issues in the country (national and/or sub-national) and/or region.
- Experience coordinating projects in a decentralized organization, working across teams, operating units and functions to achieve optimal results.
- Outstanding written and oral communication, negotiating and organizational skills.
