The Science Specialist will work closely with Conservancy science staff and external partners to advance ecological understanding of novel restoration seeding approaches on arid lands. The successful candidate will help advance the science of seed enhancement technologies as a potential way to make sagebrush ecosystem restoration more cost-effective over large areas.
- The Science Specialist will work with a team of researchers studying ways to increase the success rate of native perennial plant restoration on abandoned mine lands and other sagebrush sites in Wyoming using seed enhancement technologies.
- The Science Specialist will work with Conservancy staff in Wyoming and Oregon, as well as external partners (e.g., Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality, Bureau of Land Management, and USDA-Agricultural Research Service) to develop and test seed technologies across environmental gradients in the sagebrush ecosystem.
- The Science Specialist will lead the design and implementation of experiments in the greenhouse and field; manage laboratory and greenhouse equipment; analyze data; write project reports; maintain communications with project partners; and contribute to educational programs related to this project.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- 2 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with GIS software and data to create maps.
- Experience conducting surveys, recording data and writing project reports.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Masters degree in ecology, botany or related field.
- Strong written, visual, and verbal communication skills and experience translating complex technical and scientific issues to a broad range of audiences.
- Experience with experimental design and statistical analyses.
- Familiarity with sagebrush steppe vegetation and ecology.
- Expertise with vegetation and soil sampling techniques, measurement and interpretation of climatic and edaphic influences on plant development.
- Record of peer reviewed publications in scientific journals.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams.
- Experience creating partnerships, working, and communicating with conservation colleagues from agencies and/or academic institutions.
